Review: AGE OF SAMURAI: BATTLE FOR JAPAN Sharpens The Documentary Format

The Samurai are a well know group of warriors, but Netflix brings out a full and in-depth look into how their rise to power came to be, going from servant to supreme in a new documentary series, Age of Samurai: Battle For Japan. While I wish there was some more time focused on samurai culture, armor, and general traditions, it is still a great documentary with extremely intense reenactments that show what it was like in Japan during the 15th and 16th centuries.

As I mentioned, this documentary focuses on historical battles and figures that shaped the political face of Japan for over 150 years. Inside the history of the war generals of Japan, we see the rise of samurai and how they slowly became a fundamental point of power and respect in Japanese culture. Each episode follows various leaders and their subordinates warmongering and rise/fall of power. I wish that there was more focus on people’s perspective of samurai, the samurai’s culture, and the physical/mental and spiritual parts of the samurai. We see a number of these parts inadvertently through the stories being told. But other than that what made a samurai who he was was really only addressed a few times in this documentary. It’s still terribly engaging and full of information, just not the information that I expected from its title and advertisements.

The presentation for the series is a lot more brutal than I expected. When watching a documentary, I normally expect to see some war, some dramatic looks from people dressed in time-appropriate clothing, and so on. However, there are a lot of people and a lot of beautifully made outfits, and a lot more death and destruction showed on the screen than I thought there would be. It was more like watching an intense, informational movie than just a bunch of historians talking with some cool pictures. Also, whatever budget they had, they did very well with it. The costuming is fantastic, the gory, special effects are surprisingly good and the acting is really solid giving the characters a lot of emotional depth and realism.

The biggest problem with the documentary is that I felt that the run time on each episode was a little long mostly because the actual writing and commentaries are informational but sometimes very repetitive. When you’ve heard the same two or three guys say that a battle is “one of the most important battles in Japanese history” for the fourth or fifth time, the phrase loses its impact and just drags the episodes on a little too long.

All in all, for those who are history buffs, enjoy ancient Japanese or samurai culture even in the slightest, this is a great documentary with lots of loads of awesome information and excellent reenactments. The only thing is you may just want to watch it at a slightly faster speed to hurry over those slightly longer run times.

Kevin Feige Says DOCTOR STRANGE 2 and CAPTAIN MARVEL 2 Will Still Make Sense if You Don’t Watch WANDAVISION

wandavision-geraldine-and-wanda-1611351357.jpeg

Fans of the MCU have been excitedly devouring the series WandaVision on Disney+ for the last several weeks. The story has taken us down the path of Wanda Maximoff in the weeks after Avengers: Endgame, and has brought us up to speed on the character Monica Rambeau, who we first met as a child in the ‘90s set Captain Marvel. The word is that this series will lead right into the events of the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where Wanda will be heavily involved in the story.

But MCU President Kevin Feige wants movie fans to know that even if you haven’t seen the series WandaVision, you will still be able to understand Doctor Strange 2, as well as the Captain Marvel sequel. In a recent Television Critics’ Association press tour, Cinema Blend says Feige clarified:

“So there were lots of conversations with [director] Sam Raimi and [writer] Michael Waldron, and the entire Doctor Strange team, that this movie needs to work for people who watched WandaVision, but more importantly, needs to work for people who didn’t, who maybe Endgame was the last time they saw Wanda, or one of the earlier movies. Or maybe she’s a character they’re meeting for the first time.”

And as for Teyonah Parris‘s character Monica Rambeau, who will reprise her role in Captain Marvel 2, Feige also confirmed:

“Well, I worry about everything all the time. My job is to worry about everything. One thing I don’t worry about is more Teyonah Parris. I think that’s always a good thing. But it is very similar to movie-to-movie, honestly. We try to make the stories unfold in a way that if you are following along and have seen what has preceded it, you’ll be right up to speed. And more importantly, if you haven’t, you’ll be up to speed.”

I can’t imagine not having watched WandaVision or any of the Marvel properties that are interwoven through the storyline, but it is a smart move for Feige to make sure that each of these puzzle piece movies and series stand alone as well as together. It makes sure not to isolate any audience member, and get the most fandom out of each project.

If you haven’t yet, you can catch up on WandaVision on Disney+. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on March 24, 2022, and Captain Marvel II arrives on November 11, 2022.

Funny and Crazy Trailer For Hulu’s SOLAR OPPOSITES Season 2

Hulu’s animated comedy series Solar Opposites is coming back for a second season, and they’ve released the first trailer for it giving us a little taste of what’s in store. I thought the first season of the series was great, and I’m sure that Season 2 will end up being just as funny. I’m definitely digging what this trailer has to show off! One thing is for sure, things are getting wild and crazy!

The series was co-created by Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty) and Mike McMahan (Rick & Morty) and as you’ll see, this next season will take the alien characters beyond the borders of the suburbs that they live in, and there’s going to be storylines involving “big dick energy” and “unholy creations” that turn people into wine. I’ll let you see what that is when you watch the trailer.

Solar Opposites centers around a team of four aliens “who escape their exploding home world only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Justin Roiland) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love humans and all their TV, junk food and fun stuff. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.”

I should probably let you know that the trailer is NSFW, just to be on the safe side. Solar Opposites returns to Hulu on March 26, 2021.

The 9 Most Memorable U.S. Marshals in Television and Film History

Comingsoon.net is on the run and imagining being hunted down by some of the best federal marshals in the biz. Check out our picks in the gallery below!

There’s something undeniably cinematic about a U.S. Marshal; the Marshals Service being the primary agency for dealing with the most romanticized of criminals: the fugitive. This is not to say that a fugitive in cinema or on television is always an admirable character, and neither are the marshals; however, whether they have a questionable moral compass or are a chain-smoking drunk, they’re still a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

The one aspect of the stereotypical U.S. Marshal that seems to permeate this medium revolves around a sort of “southern charm.” They’re all cowboys.  In honor of all successful manhunts, here are some gunslinging U.S. marshals we’ll never forget.

J.J. Abrams Producing a New SUPERMAN Reboot For WB with Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates

Warner Bros. is rebooting Superman and J.J. Abrams is attached to produce the film. The studio has also hired Ta-Nehisi Coates to write the script. No plot details have been revealed, but the report makes a point of saying that “Henry Cavill is eager to get back into the cape.” So it seems like Cavill will be back in the role, which is great news that DC fans will be happy to hear.

Coates really has done much with films, but he’s an author and journalist for The Atlantic. He covered cultural, social and political issues, specifically that of African Americans and white supremacy. He’s also written a Black Panther and a Captain America series for Marvel Comics. Coates is also attached to write a Ryan Coogler directed drama feature titled Wrong Answer about “a math teacher in Atlanta who is scandalized when he looks to get funding for his school by altering his students’ test scores.” Michael Jordan is attached to star in that film.

Hannah Minghella will serve as a producer on the new Superman project. Fans have been waiting to see what WB would do with the Superman franchise since the studio changed the trajectory of their DC movie plans. We knew one day we’d see another Superman movie, we just don’t know what to expect from it.

What would you like to see happen with a new Superman movie?
