In the film, indignant retired general Enrique finally faces trial for the genocidal massacre of thousands of Mayans decades ago. As a horde of angry protestors threatens to invade their opulent home, the women of the house – his haute wife, conflicted daughter, and precocious granddaughter – weigh their responsibility to shield the erratic, senile Enrique against the devastating truths behind being publicly revealed and the increasing sense that a wrathful supernatural force is targeting them for his crimes. Meanwhile, much of the family’s domestic staff flees, leaving only loyal housekeeper Valeriana until a mysterious young indigenous maid arrives.

La Llorona blends together the terror of both myth and reality into a devastating exposé of the genocidal atrocities against the Mayan community in Guatemala. Through a modern retelling of the classic Latin American legend, the film forces a reckoning with not-so-distant crimes which should not have been forgotten. Following a premiere at the 2019 Venice Film Festival where the film won Best Film (Venice Days), the horror-thriller has had an impressive festival tour with appearances at TIFF, Sundance and BFI and is being celebrated as a true depiction of Latino culture.

The title is the third feature from iconic Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante (Tremors), who co-wrote the film with Lisandro Sánchez, and stars María Mercedes Coroy (Ixcanul), Margarita Kenéfic (Aro Tolbukhin in the Mind of a Killer), Sabrina de la Hoz (Tremors) and Julio Diaz.

Neil Blomkamp Confirms a DISTRICT 10 Screenplay Is Being Written

neil-blomkamp-confirms-a-district-10-screenplay-is-being-written.jpg

It looks like District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is finally moving forward with the long-awaited sequel, District 10. The filmmaker confirmed on Twitter that he and his writing partners, Sharlto Copley and Terri Tatchell, currently writing the screenplay for the film!

District 9 is easily Blomkamp’s best film and fans have been wanting to see a sequel to it ever since it was released. I’m actually surprised that it’s taken this long to happen! Blomkamp has been talking about this sequel for years.

There are no details on the story to share, but when previously talking about an 18-page treatment for District 10 that he had for eight years ago, he said it is “really fucking cool.” When previously talking about the film he said:

“Ok, so with ‘District 10’ the basic answer is yes. I want to go back to that world and tell rest of the story with Wikus and Christopher. The issue right now is that I have many other projects and ideas that I also want to work on and complete…..and most importantly, the exact right REASON to make District 10 needs be very clear. The first film was based so explicitly on real themes and topics from South Africa that effected [sic] me greatly growing up there, that we need to make sure the next film does not forget that.”

Blomkamp most recently directed a horror film over the summer during the pandemic titled Demonic. He’s also got a sci-fi project titled Inferno that he’ll eventually be directing with Taylor Kitsch.

Halle Berry is set to star in and executive produce the upcoming film The Mothership from Netflix and MRC Film. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Matthew Charman (Bridge of Spies) wrote the script and will be directing the film for his feature directorial debut.

Here’s the synopsis:

The sci-fi adventure follows Sara Morse (Berry) one year since her husband mysteriously vanished from their rural farm. When she discovers a strange, extraterrestrial object underneath their home, Sara and her kids embark on a race to find their husband, father, and most importantly – the truth.

This sounds like it could be an interesting movie. Will you be tuning in to watch The Mothership?

Neill Blomkamp Plans District 9 Follow-Up, Alien 5 Dead

Neill Blomkamp announces District 10, sequel script in progress!

Since District 9 became a smash hit in 2009 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has been teasing the possibilities of a sequel for years. This morning Blomkamp made things official by announcing on Twitter that he, his wife/writing partner Terri Tatchell and original star Sharlto Copley are currently penning the script for District 10!

In an interview back in 2017 Blomkamp teased his plans for a District 9 follow-up…

“With District 9, I plan on making another film in that world,” he said when asked if Oats Studios would work on tie-ins to District 9Elysium or Chappie“To go back and work with WETA, and make the film would be cool, but anything that pre-exists like that may not be the best fit for whatever we’re trying here.”

The original District 9 followed a petty bureaucrat named Wikus (Copley) who comes into contact with a mutative alien substance. Amidst his transformation he becomes a target of a weapons company that wants to use him for research. Unable to blend in amongst humans, he is forced into hiding in an alien slum.

Released in August of 2009, District 9 starred Sharlto Copley. Produced by Peter Jackson (who also worked alongside Blomkamp on a failed Halo adaptation), it was made for just $30 million and grossed $210.8 million worldwide. It received rave reviews and -surprisingly for a genre film- was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Film Editing, Visual Effects and Adapted Screenplay.

While Blomkamp has not released a feature since 2013’s Chappie, he has been attached to several high-profile franchise pictures including the legacy sequels Alien 5 and RoboCop Returns. He dropped out of both projects. Blomkamp recently shot a horror film during the COVID-19 pandemic which is titled Demonic and will debut in March at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival.

POKEMON Gen 4 Gets Their Remake and More in New Pokemon Presents

Pokémon fans got a treat today with The Pokémon Company’s Pokémon Presents. This 20-minute event shared some fun news for fans while highlighting the 25-year phenomenon that has been Pokémon. I really loved the opening video that highlighted I think every Pokémon thing ever to some degree. I do wonder if it missed a couple of things, but it got a lot of the spin-off games included in there.

The first thing that got shared was another look at New Pokémon Snap. I am personally very excited for this game. Is that a new butterfly Pokémon or am I just forgetting one? The game looks gorgeous and I cannot wait to play it. We also learned that we’ll get to edit the photos that we take of our favorite Pokémon before sharing them with your friends online. New Pokémon Snap will be available for Nintendo Switch on April 30 with pre-orders now live.

We then got to see some news about events happening tomorrow for Pokémon Day. These span Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokémon Masters EX, Pokémon GO!, and more. Check the video below for all the details.

The third announcement was a pretty big one about the video games. Diamond and Pearl fans are finally getting their wish with remakes of their beloved games. I love the overworld artwork for these remakes. They look so cute! Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are releasing Late 2021 on Nintendo Switch! Interesting enough, these remakes are being developed by ILCA. The locations and Pokémon seem to be unchanged, presenting a faithful recreation for fans.

We then got a look at another story. Pokémon is getting a new open world game set in the past of the Sinnoh region. I can’t help but compare it to Breath of the Wild which is pretty crazy. Is this the Pokémon game that I’ve been dreaming of for years? The game seems to feature Cyndaquil, Rowlet, and Oshawott. Of course Arceus is involved as well. Pokémon Legends Arceus is the title for this game and it will launch in Early 2022. I am so freaking excited for this game. In Pokémon Legends Arceus, you’ll choose one of the three starters previously mentioned and then go out into the world and try to create Sinnoh’s very first Pokedex. There will be turn-based battles as well as the ability to throw Poke Balls in an open world environment. This game looks so awesome!

I know everyone was wanting the Gen 4 remakes, but for me, Pokémon Legends Arceus stole the show and is what I’m most excited for now. What has you hyped the most?

New Teaser Trailer for THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 4 Premiering in April

A badass new teaser trailer has been revealed for Season 4 of the hit Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale. Returning stars of the series include Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, O-T Fagbenle, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, and Bradley Whitford. Newcomers to the cast include Mckenna Grace, Zawe Ashton, and Reed Birney.

According to Deadline, in Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale, June is a “fierce rebel leader,” but the risks she takes “bring unexpected and dangerous new challenges.” But her mission to get justice and revenge begins to consume her and even threatens to “destroy her most cherished relationships.”

This teaser looks awesome, and it gives a lot of hope to fans who saw June shot down in the last episode after helping the plane full of children and handmaids escape Gilead. It looks like she’s back to fight the good fight, in jeans no less, and I can’t wait to watch it. Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale begins on Hulu on April 28th.

Hulu Orders a Mike Tyson Biopic Series Titled IRON MIKE and Mike Tyson Isn’t Happy About It

Iconic boxer Mike Tyson is getting a biopic series titled Iron Mike. The series will be coming to Hulu and they’ve ordered an eight-episode series.

The project is being written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie. This is the same creative team who previously made the Margot Robbie film I, Tonya. I liked how they handled that film and the story of Tanya Harding, so I imagine the way they tell the story of Mike Tyson will be just as entertaining.

Margot Robbie is also an executive producer in the film with Mixed-ish’s Karin Gist serving as showrunner and executive producer.

The series will explore the wild, tragic and controversial life and career of heavyweight champion Mike Tyson – one of the most polarizing figures in sports culture.

Tyson is widely considered one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time and was the undisputed champion between 1987 and 1990, claiming his first belt at the age of 20, the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title.

He was convicted of rape and sentenced to six years in prison in 1992 and regained his title after he was released in 1995, but lost his title to Evander Holyfield, who he would later bite a portion of his ear off in their 1997 rematch.

After his retirement, he would go on to star in The Hangover films, starred in his own reality series Taking on Tyson for Animal Planet that documented him competing in pigeon racing and created the Scooby Doo-esque animated series Mike Tyson Mysteries for Adult Swim.

Mike Tyson has always been quite a character, and it’ll be interesting to see how this series plays with his personality and the life he’s led.

Mike Tyson isn’t too thrilled about the project and is calling it “Cultural Misappropriation.” So, he’s decided to develop a rival project. He shared the following on Instagram:

Hulu’s announcement to do an unauthorized mini-series of the Tyson story without compensation, although unfortunate, isn’t surprising. This announcement on the heels of social disparities in our country is a prime example of how Hulu’s corporate greed led to this tone-deaf cultural misappropriation of the Tyson life story. To make this announcement during Black History Month only confirms Hulu’s concern for dollars over respect for black story rights. Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to black experiences especially after all that has transpired in 2020. The real Mike Tyson authorized story is in development and will be announced in coming days. Hulu to announce stealing a black athletes story during Black History month couldn’t be more inappropriate or tone deaf.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS Director Jon M. Chu to Helm THE GREAT CHINESE ART HEIST for Warner Bros.

great chinese art heist.jpg

Jon M. Chu, best known for his hit 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians, has been hired to take on the film The Great Chinese Art Heist for Warner Bros. The studio is still looking for a writer to adapt the story, which is based on the GQ article by Alex W. Palmer.

Deadline reports the following about the article and story:

The article follows a slew of museum art robberies that occurred in Europe, in which Chinese antiquities were stolen, chiefly those that came from the country’s old Summer Palace which was raided in 1860 by French soldiers. No one knows who the thieves are, but the works of art continually wind up back in China. Essentially, there’s a new generation of wealthy Chinese people who are collecting artifacts from the old Summer Palace. Is China’s government behind the art theft wave? The feature questions who gets to own art, and who gets to own history and culture. The GQ piece also poses the question whether there’s some sort of coordinated effort to reclaim Chinese art.

Meanwhile the museums are remaining quiet about the robberies. The thefts put museums in a vulnerable position: Everyone questions their security, no one wants to donate works or materials, and their insurance rates spike as many would question an art institution’s credibility.

Chu jumped at the chance to direct this project, even with his schedule filled. His adaptation of the musical In the Heights is scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max on June 18th, and he is working on a screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, as well as the second and third installments in the Crazy Rich Asians film series.

Does this sound like an interesting story to you?
