New Cruella Featurette Highlights Importance of 1970s Music to the Story

Ahead of the film’s debut next Friday, Walt Disney Studios has released a brand new Cruella featurette for Craig Gillespie’s upcoming live-action feature, based on the character created by Dodie Smith from her 1956 book The Hundred and One Dalmatians. The video features interviews from Gillespie, Emma Stone, and Emma Thompson as they talked about the importance of using 1970s music in bringing the Disney villain’s origin story to life. The film is slated to arrive in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on Friday, May 28.

The new behind-the-scenes featurette’s release also came with the debut of Walt Disney Records’ official soundtrack and original score album for Cruella which are now both available on all music outlets. The official lyric video for Florence + The Machine’s original song, “Call me Cruella,” has also been released. The track is included on both albums as well as the Official Cruella Playlist available here.

Disney’s Cruella will explore the rebellious early days of one of cinema’s most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, the film follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.

One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly Haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella.

The live-action film will be led by Oscar winners Emma Stone as the young titular fur-obsessed villain and Emma Thompson as the Baroness. Joining them are Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser as the henchmen Jasper and Horace, along with Mark Strong, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Emily Beecham.

The DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie Will Be Set in The Forgotten Realm

the-dungeons-dragons-movie-will-be-set-in-the-forgotten-realm.jpg

We’ve got some new information to share with you regarding the Dungeons & Dragons movie that is being developed by writers and directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Thanks to a recently released press release from Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast division we know the setting of the film

The movie will be set in The Forgotten Realms, which was created in 1967 as a setting for short stories by Ed Greenwood. It has since become one of the most enduring campaign settings for D&D. The primary focus of the setting is the continent of Faerûn, which is part of the world of Abeir-Toril, an Earth-like planet with certain obvious influences and similarities from the real world and fantasy fiction.

Here’s a description of the land of Faerûn:

From the bitter, windswept steppes of the Endless Waste to the storm-lashed cliffs of the Sword Coast stretches a wide, wild land of shining kingdoms and primal wilderness, Faerûn is only one continent of the world known as Toril. Other lands lie in distant corners of the world, but Faerun is the center of it all, the crossroads and crux upon which all else turns. Dozens of nations, hundreds of citystates, and countless tribes, villages, and settlements dot its expanse.

The continent of Faerûn is a landmass of approximately nine and a half million square miles, located mainly in the northern hemisphere of the world of Toril. Sub-arctic extremes chill its northern reaches, where ice sheets like the Great Glacier dominate the landscape in blinding white. To the south are the equatorial jungles of Chult and the tropical coasts of Halruaa. It’s bordered on the west by the Trackless Sea and on the east by the Endless Wastes and the Hordelands that separate it from Kara-Tur.

Faerûn is an open land full of kingdoms and empires, large and small, and scattered city-states and villages struggling to make their way in a landscape that can be unforgiving wilderness one mile and cosmopolitan city the next.

Countless millions of humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, and other sentient beings call Faerûn home. It is a land of magic and intrigue, cruel violence and divine compassion, where gods have ascended and died, and millennia of warfare and conquests have shaped dozens of unique cultures.

The film stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, and Sophia Lillis. There has been a synopsis for the film going around on social media, but that synopsis has been confirmed to be false, so I’m not going to post it here.

When previously talking about the tone of the film, Goldstein explained, We want it to be fun. It’s not an out and out comedy, but it is an action-fantasy movie with a lot of comedic elements and characters we hope people will really get into and enjoy watching their adventures.”

Daley also talked about finding a format for the film and how they never went into the project wanting to spoof D&D. “D&D is such a unique look at the fantasy genre where it is contemporary in terms of the people playing it and the way they speak to each other. So we never wanted to spoof the genre of fantasy or take the piss out of it. But we did want to find another way into it that we hadn’t necessarily seen before. Just the format of Dungeons & Dragons is so interesting and fun and all about critical thinking and thinking on your feet and figuring out ways to make things work after they fall flat. There’s a lot of the spirit of that that we’re trying to inject into the movie itself.”

While we now know the setting for the film, there are a ton of different directions that the story can go. We’ll just have to wait and see what that story will be.

Dungeons & Dragons will be released on March 3, 2023.

Mark Ruffalo Joins Yorgos Lanthimos’ Frankenstein Pic Poor Things

According to Collider, Marvel Cinematic Universe star Mark Ruffalo has signed on to star opposite Oscar winner Emma Stone in director Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming film adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s Poor Things, a reimagination of the Frankenstein story. It also previously revealed that Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe and Golden Globe winner Ramy Youssef were in talks to join the project. It’s unclear if Dafoe and Youssef are still attached to appear or not.

Ruffalo’s casting comes after he has won his first Golden Globe award in February for his acclaimed leading performance in HBO’s limited series, I Know This Much Is True. He is currently in production for Marvel Studios’ upcoming MCU series She-Hulk, where he will reprise his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

First published in 1992, Poor Things is a Victorian-set novel that will feature Emma Stone as Bella Baxter – a beautiful young erotomaniac brought back to life with the brain of an infant. It was also inspired by Mary Shelly’s classic gothic novel Frankenstein.

The upcoming adaptation is being described as a Victorian love story about discovery and scientific daring. This project will also reunite Stone, Lanthimos, and writer Tony McNamara, who all previously worked together on the 2018 acclaimed period dramedy The Favourite.

The film’s synopsis reads:

Ostensibly the memoirs of late-19th-century Glasgow physician Archibald McCandless, the narrative follows the bizarre life of oversexed, volatile Bella Baxter, an emancipated woman, and a female Frankenstein. Bella is not her real name; as Victorian Blessington, she drowned herself to escape her abusive husband, but a surgeon removed the brain from the fetus she was carrying and placed it in her skull, resuscitating her. The revived Bella has the mental age of a child. Engaged to marry McCandless, she chloroforms him and runs off with a shady lawyer who takes her on a whirlwind adventure, hopping from Alexandria to Odessa to a Parisian brothel. As her brain matures, Bella develops a social conscience, but her rescheduled nuptials to Archie are cut short when she is recognized as Victoria by her lawful husband, Gen. Sir Aubrey Blessington.

Poor Things will be directed by Yorgos Lanthimos from a screenplay he co-adapted with Tony McNamara, who co-written the director’s last movie that had earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Production is scheduled to begin this year in the fall.

Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers to Get 5 More Games Bringing Total to Over 100

caveman_ninja.jpg

Starting on May 26, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will gain access to five more games which brings the grand total of classic games available up to 104! That’s an impressive milestone. Sadly, the new games do not include Earthbound like many fans continue to hope. Instead, the NES title Ninja JaJaMaru-kun will become available. This title was originally only released in Japan so that’s cool.

  • Ninja JaJaMaru-kun

    • Take on the role of a ninja and rescue the captured Princess Sakura in this action-packed game, originally released only in Japan. JaJaMaru must use his throwing stars to defeat lurking monsters. Keep an eye out for the ultimate power-up – a ride on Gamapa-kun, the giant frog!

Meanwhile, the SNES will be getting Caveman Ninja which many might know as Joe & Mac, Magical Drop2, Super Baseball Simulator 1.000, and Spanky’s Quest.

  • Caveman Ninja (also known as Joe & Mac)

    • Can cave-dudes Joe and Mac rescue the lost cave-dudettes? In this action game from 1991, life was pretty cool for Joe and Mac until a bunch of Neanderthal nerds crashed their village. The dudes will have to leap to the rescue and jump, dash and use roll attacks to get past the stone-age obstacles in their way. Just make sure to pick the best weapon for the situation, and the boys are sure to make it through!

  • Magical Drop2

    • This puzzle game launched on the Super Famicom™ system in 1996, but it never saw an English release. But even if you’ve never played, the rules are simple to learn. Catch and throw the drops that descend from overhead. Create vertical lines of three drops of the same color to clear all the connected drops. Enjoy four playable modes, including a mode that assigns you a rank when the game ends, as well as a story mode with 10 characters to play!

  • Super Baseball Simulator 1.000

    • Get ready for high intensity, superhuman baseball spectacles! Use Ultra Plays like Phantom Ball, which will make the ball vanish mid-pitch, or Meteor Hit, which will knock out fielders who make contact with the ball before it bounces. With multiplayer options, a grand total of 18 baseball teams and the ability to create your own original team, this is the wacky baseball simulation dreams are made of!

  • Spanky’s Quest

    • Spanky was on his way to a picnic when the witch Morticia began dropping bricks from the sky. Trapped, with six towers now built across the land, Spanky must clear each before the witch’s evil pet crow catches him. He’ll have to use his magic ball to stun enemies, bounce it off his head to power it up and pop it to attack – and try on some hats along the way.

What title are you most excited to play? What games do you wish they would add to the service? Do you think we’ll get an N64 announcement at E3?
