Color Out of Space review:

Richard Stanley was once one of the most prime directors to keep an eye on after the cult hits Hardware and Dust Devil, but became the center of one of the most notorious blacklistings in Hollywood after being fired from the infamous 1996 adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau after only three days of production. Now, 23 years later, the South African director is making his feature-length comeback with a new adaptation of the acclaimed H.P. Lovecraft short story Color Out of Space, and it may just be his best work yet.

Set in the rural hills near Arkham, Massachusetts, the story follows the Gardner family, patriarch artist Nathan (Cage), financial advisor Theresa (Richardson), occult-obsessed Lavinia (Arthur) and space-intrigued Benny (Meyer) as they trade their city lives for a more peaceful life in the woods after inheriting Nathan’s father’s estate. As they all attempt to adjust to the new secluded lifestyle, a meteorite crashes down in the nearby woods, which affects the water supply and plant life in the area and brings with it something terrifying that threatens the Gardner family and the few neighbors they have in the hills.

Having been a fan of Lovecraft since childhood when his mother read his stories to him, there are few people better to have developed an adaptation of the author than Stanley, who took the six years since announcing the project to properly develop the story in a way that would remain faithful to the source material while also updating it in a way to shock even the most veteran of genre enthusiasts. The atmosphere remains eerie and deliberate, keeping the mystery going and giving hints as to what’s going on while focusing on the increasing madness the Gardner family all experience in various forms.

One of the best updates to the source material is some of the transformations the meteorite causes following its Earthly arrival, which even as a frequent horror viewer prove to be some of the most shocking and horrifying visuals put to screen the genre has ever seen. Grotesque in a way that’s both prudent to the story’s themes while also horrifying to the general eye, Stanley and his crew masterfully use practical effects and brief glimpses at the terrors to toy with audiences’ imaginations and send them into unsettling territory.

In addition to the terrifying visuals and eerie story, the film is supported by strong work from its cast, namely that of Cage as the patriarch trying to hold his family together and Richardson as a mother struggling to adjust to her new rural life for the sake of her marriage and her kids. Cage, practically the virtuoso of madness at this point, explores a character trait he’s very familiar with and yet does so in a more restrained fashion than normal that keeps his descent compelling and heartbreaking to watch.

The only real problems with the film come in the forms of the beginning and the ending, which finds the writing to be a tad more lackluster and unoriginal compared to the rest of the script. In setting up our characters and wrapping up the story, Stanley and co-writer Scarlett Amaris have drafted lines that feel too similar to other works in the horror genre and don’t feel like fair representations of the deeper struggles and conflicts they are all going through as the story progresses.

Overall, the film proves to be a compelling and shocking bit of existential and cosmic horror that is skillfully, and quite beautifully, directed by Stanley and well-acted by its stars and confirms that he is still a directorial force to watch and that Cage may have finally found a new genre that is perfect for his talents.

GO GO POWER RANGERS Is Coming to a Close with Issue #32

If you’ve visited GeekTyrant in the last year, you know that I love the Power Rangers comics from BOOM! Studios. That’s why it is with a bittersweet heart that I am reporting that Go Go Power Rangers will come to a close with issue #32. I say this is bittersweet because the comic was fantastic and told amazing stories, so I’m sad to see it go. However, the series did have to come to a close eventually, and this sounds like a great, natural end that many comics don’t get.

The origin of the Omega Rangers concludes in this final issue of SABAN’S GO GO POWER RANGERS! Jason, Trini and Zack meet Kiya for the first time on Safehaven to begin their new roles as Omega Rangers! Meanwhile, what will it take for Aisha, Rocky and Adam to prove they’re ready to be the newest Power Rangers on Earth?

Over on Twitter, Dafna Pleban, Senior Editor at BOOM! Studios, and Ryan Parrott, writer for GGPR both explained that GGPR was going to end eventually and this is just that point.

Of course, Parrott also explained that he’ll still be writing Power Rangers adventures with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

I’m just glad that there are still plenty of adventures to look forward to. GGPR #32 will be available on April 22. A running cover is coming from Eleonora Carlini with other variant covers by Amelia Vidal and Miguel Mercado.

The Upcoming MEGA MAN Movie Will Be Written By THE BATMAN Writer Mattson Tomlin

the-upcoming-mega-man-movie-will-be-written-by-the-batman-writer-mattson-tomlin-social.jpg

It looks like Capcom is still moving forward with their plans to make a Mega Man movie. The last we heard, the film was being written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish, some Paranormal Activity sequels, and Nerve).

Well, it looks like some changes have been made since last year as THR has reported that The Batman screenwriter, Mattson Tomlin, has been hired to write the script. Chernin Entertainment is producing the film, who has been involved in making films such as Planet of the Apes, Ford v Ferrari, Hidden Figures, Oblivion, Underwater, and more. The movie was originally set up at Fox, but now Disney seems to be running with it.

There’s no word on if Joost and Schulman are still involved in some way, but this is the information for the film that was previously released:

Based on the influential and globally beloved Mega Man franchise, Capcom aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.

Mega Man was one of my favorite video games growing up and I’m really hoping that this film captures the awesomeness of the game and its lead character. I guess we’ll eventually find out!

Marvel Studios is Reportedly Developing Two New TV Shows Including One For SECRET INVASION

A new rumor has surfaced regarding two unannounced series projects being developed for Disney+. The following intel comes from Bleeding Cool, who tends to have a solid track record for scoops like this, but since nothing has been officially announced, this is just a rumor.

They are saying that Marvel is developing two new shows. One is said to be a Secret Invasion show that is based on the comic book arc written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu. The story reveals that several people in the Marvel Universe were actually Skrulls and have been planted as part of a planned invasion of Earth by a religious sect of Skrulls.

Seeds of this whole concept have been set up in the MCU with the film’s Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which showed Skrull characters Talos and his wife masquerading as Nick Fury and Maria Hill helping our Spider-Man. We also saw Nick Fury in space working with the Skrulls, which we believe is S.W.OR.D. This could fit in with the previous rumor about Hulking making his MCU debut in WandaVision.

The report points out that Marvel Comics is currently preparing “a major Skrull invasion storyline, Empyre, featuring an assault on Earth by a combined Skrull and Kree army let by Hulkling, and we have been told that the comic book from last year, Meet The Skrulls about an embedded family of Skrull operatives, will play a major role in the Empyre comics.”

As for the second series, we don’t have any details, but it has already been given the green light, and will reportedly revolve around an A-List character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We have no idea who that character could be.

I hope these rumors are true! It would be pretty cool to see the Secret Invasion storyline get adapted. I was expecting it to eventually happen on the big screen, but maybe the series will help set up for the story to continue on the big screen as the story escalates and builds into something epic.

What do you think about this latest Marvel series rumor?
