ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese talked to Pig star Alex Wolff about his stellar performance as a truffle salesman and working alongside Nicolas Cage. Check out the video below or read the full transcript.

Tyler Treese: Alex, this is such an interesting film. How familiar were you with truffle hunting prior to the role? I wasn’t very familiar. I’d seen a King of the Hill episode where a pig starts tripping on mushrooms, but other than that I learned a lot from this.

Alex Wolff: That’s really funny. I haven’t seen that episode. That’s so funny. I didn’t know really anything about it until I read the script. Now I think that I could like enter a truffle knowledge competition because I went just completely headfirst into the underground world of truffles. I think I’ve read basically every book about truffles, probably not every single one, but the main starting-off, jumping-off point was this book called The Truffle Underground that I read. That was incredible and was basically The Sopranos for truffle hunting. And then I read Truffle Boy, which was like The Catcher in the Rye, but about a young truffle hunter, about Ian Purkayastha. His book. So I was very, very moved by those two books. So then I just went deeper and deeper and deeper. Now, yeah, I know basically everything to when I go to the restaurant, I’m like, “So what kind of truffles are these?”

Pig is very much a character study of Nicolas Cage’s character, but you serve as such an important role and you two have so much chemistry on screen that it’s really fun to watch. Does your approach change when you’re kind of that supporting character that is there to complement rather than to be the focus?

Um, ouch [laughs]. Interesting wording, but it doesn’t change, no.

Getting to shoot with Nic Cage had to be incredible. He has so many great monologues during the film and does so many great speeches. Were you able to learn anything working on Pig and learning from him?

All jokes aside, with a joke at the last question, I really was there to support him and I really would not want it any other way. I just did a couple of interviews with him where I just became completely verklempt and was very emotional just because Nic and I found each other at a time where I felt like we both really needed each other personally. I was going through kind of a hard time and I think he was too. So we kind of came together at the beginning of this movie at just the perfect moment, but even more than that part of the whole reason I’m even an actor is because of Nic. He’s always been my favorite actor since I was a kid. And, you know, I remember seeing The Family Man at a young, young age and it ruining my life, and Matchstick Men and Raising Arizona and Adaptation. I find him to be the most versatile, special, incredible actor.

Then working with him, I didn’t realize that someone could be so incredible and so singular. So raw and yet be the most… he did something that no other actor’s ever done where I’ve said this, but it felt like he threw out a rope and pulled me in. He guided me through the scene. So by the end, all the angles were finished. I didn’t even realize. It was like it happened in a haze because you just fall into this fugue state with him, no matter what, cause there’s just not one moment of false. There is no fraudulence with Nic. It’s just all honest, raw feeling. It’s even hard to talk about it or intellectualize it because the experience was so profound and once in a lifetime. I don’t think I’ll ever have a collaboration as exciting or as emotional as the one I have and hopefully continue to have with Nic.

That sounds incredible. You’re in a really interesting part of your career where Old and Pig are just releasing right after another. I’m sure doing double the press isn’t as exciting, but how exciting is it having these two films out and they’re both so good?

Oh, thank you so much. It’s really, really exciting. They feel like two different parts of my life somehow. So in some ways, they feel super unrelated, except for the fact that they’re both coming out. So it does feel like I’m talking about two totally separate things. So it’s hard. It’s odd. Everyone else sees them as kind of coupled together. Cause they’re coming up, but me, I’m like, “Wow, that those are two different lifetimes.” It’s very funny.

Tom Hiddleston Says He Would “Absolutely” Play Loki for the Rest of His Life

tom-hiddleston-says-he-would-absolutely-play-loki-for-the-rest-of-his-life.jpg

Tom Hiddleston has played Loki in the MCU for a long time. He finally ended up getting his own standalone story in a Loki series that is playing out on Disney+, and that series will continue with a second season. So, how long exactly will Hiddleston play the character? According to him, he is prepared to continue to play Loki for the rest of his life!

During a recent Tumblr Q&A, Hiddleston was asked about how long he is willing to play Loki for and this was his response:

“If I were asked to play Loki for the rest of my life, would I? Yeah, absolutely. I’m so lucky that I’ve got to play Loki for this long. I feel like he’s such an interesting character who’s been around in human consciousness for so long. And he’s got so many different aspects, so many different complex characteristics, that it feels like every time I play him I find out something new or we get to evolve him or take him down an avenue that we haven’t gone down before.

“Yeah, [Loki’s] been around for a while. I think he’s going to be around for a lot longer. Meanwhile, I’ll just hold on for as long as people want me to hold on for.”

I’m sure this news will make Loki fans happy. He’s been a Marvel fan favorite ever since made his debut in the MCU, and it’ll be a lot of fun seeing how the character continues to evolve.

So, what other project can we expect to see Loki in outside of the the Loki series? He’s reportedly set to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and with the way this series is setting up the character, he could easily show up at any point in any of the future upcoming films!

Review: DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB PLUS! Is Phycological Perfection

Screenshot (285).png

This review will be as spoiler-free as possible. If you are comfortable with intense psychological horror and enjoy dating sims and visual novels, then I recommend not reading the rest of the review and trying out this game. The original version is free on Steam and the Plus! version is absolutely worth your time and money.

Once in a while a game will come along and change up the formula and subvert expectations far beyond what anyone could predict. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! absolutely falls under that category. The game is so emotionally driven, and so well polished, planned, written, and presented that this review could go on for a very very long time. But let’s break it down into three major aspects: presentation, gameplay, and story.

The newest edition, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! looks immaculate. I’ve been playing it on a pretty big 4K TV, and each character model, place, and piece of art look pristine. The soundtrack is infectious and so effective that hearing bits of it played days after putting down the game still gives me vivid flashbacks of in-game events. The game’s presentation of a psychological horror game being under the guise of being a Dating Sim is unnerving and brilliant. It’s safe to say that even if this game didn’t have the subversive horror elements and deep psychological aspects, this would just be a ridiculously well-produced Dating Sim/Visual Novel.

The gameplay here follows a very classic formula of other Dating Sims. A character is put into a situation where they have the opportunity and means to flirt with and attract various romantic interests. However, it’s great to see that DDLC Plus does mix up the formula by having you write poems to try and attract certain characters. It’s simple, but an entertaining guessing game that rewards players who think hard and search for clues before writing a poem. When the game starts to veer off into other genres, it still stands as prominently a visual novel, but choices feel far more impactful, terrifying, and real than when I’ve played other Dating Sims or horror games. This is first and foremost a game that requires choice, so patience and purposeful emotional investment can be required to get the most out of this game.

Now for the story; the thing that I want to talk about the most…but need to be the quietest about for those who want to play the game. I absolutely insist on not looking up spoilers if you are interested in the game now or in the future. It is 100% worth it going into the game as blind as possible. I was impressed with how much I cared about the characters and enjoyed their silly, yet real, drama. But as the story progresses, players are able to see very deep and powerful emotions, problems, and thought processes going through the characters. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so emotionally involved and worried about a fictional character in my life. The writing is incredible and the twists and turns of the story are mind-blowing. Along with the great plot, each character is written so well that when they speak, their “voice” is unique enough that it would be fairly easy for a player to recognize who is talking without seeing their name or character model on screen. The only complaint I have is that I do wish that just about every conversation was a few lines shorter. I found characters repeating sentiments with different words every now and then. This repetition can be powerful sometimes, but I think the game would be just as powerful if every conversation ended roughly 10 seconds earlier.

This game has had one of the biggest impacts on me of any game I’ve played. It is incredibly intense, profoundly intelligent and impressively designed. Like the warning says, I absolutely do not recommend this for people who are not prepared for incredibly disturbing images and events. But if you take the time to invest and can deal with some truly intense content, then Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is worth every penny and second of your time.
