Director Neill Blomkamp Developing Multiplayer Video Game

Sci-fi director Neill Blomkamp was originally set to direct movie based in a shooter video game series — Halo — and now he’s developing a shooter video game, sans the film part. The unnamed game in question is a multiplayer shooter with narrative elements, but no further details were revealed.

In an interview with IGN, the District 9 and Chappie director spoke about joining new German developer Gunzilla Games as chief visionary officer. It sounds like a vague role, but it appears like he would be giving his experience directing films and translate it into video games. He even said it was like “an egalitarian version of being a film director.”

Blomkamp seemed to have high hopes for the shooter. He stressed that “player agency and the ability for players to just interact with it in a shooter environment” was the top priority, as nebulous as that statement is. Worldbuilding and narrative, two features not typically associated with multiplayer games, were also important to him. He reminisced that he spent about 95% of his time thinking about the worldbuilding for his film Elysium to tell the 5% the viewer sees, which is a mentality he wants to carry over to this game.

He didn’t reveal much else but did state that is still fascinated by science fiction; something that’s pretty evident when looking at his filmography. Blomkamp also cited Remedy’s Control, a Game of the Year contender that originally released in 2019, as a “fascinating” game. Its environmental destruction, ray tracing capabilities, and “really interesting design language” were highlights, but it’s not clear if these will carry over into whatever Gunzilla is creating.

Blomkamp also spoke about what he thinks of the video game medium and how it is the next dominant form of entertainment that he wants to get in on. He said he looks at passive forms of media like books or television shows as something that will always be there, but “highly interactive” pieces of media will be more alluring. While he did admit that he did not have game design experience, he thinks that he has “other expertise” that can still pay off and “potentially make the game interesting.”

As was previously stated, Blomkamp was originally set to direct a Halo movie, but the project fell through as studio funding stopped. He did, however, direct a few Halo shorts that were collectively called Halo Landfall. That seven-minute collection is on YouTube.

Gotham’s Victoria Cartagena is Renee Montoya in Batwoman Season 3

According to Deadline, Victoria Cartagena (Manifest) is returning to the DC Universe as she officially joins Javicia Leslie in the upcoming third season of The CW’s Batwoman. Cartagena has been tapped to portray the series regular role of DC hero Renee Montoya, a character which she previously played in Fox’s Gotham.

The outlet notes that Batwoman‘s Renee Montoya will be a different version of Gotham‘s Renee Montoya. The character is described as a former GCPD officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the department. She now runs the “freaks division,” which hasn’t seen a lot of action… until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary.

Batwoman is currently led by Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, the one who took up the mantle of the Scarlet Knight from Kate Kane. Season 2 had concluded its run last month, where it also debuted Wallis Day (Krypton) as the new Kate Kane following the surprising exit of Ruby Rose.

The series currently stars Rachel Skarsten as Alice, Meagan Tandy as Sophie, Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton, and Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox/ Batwing. In addition, Robin Given have also been cast to join the third season as Jada Jet.

Based on the characters from DC, Batwoman is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Caroline Dries, Geoff Johns, and Sarah Schechter.

Why We Didn’t End Up Seeing a Cameo From Iron Man or Hawkeye in BLACK WIDOW

hawkeye and iron man.jpg

Fans had a good long time to wait around and speculate about what we would see in the film Black Widow. It was scheduled to be released last year amid the beginning of the pandemic, but it saw one pushback after another, and we finally got to see it over a year later. While we waited, fans threw out ideas of Taskmaster’s identity, as well as who, if any, of the Avengers would be showing up to make cameos in the film.

The two top contenders for who we thought we might see were Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye. Barton and Natasha/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) had made reference to their time in Budapest together in other films, so this felt like a natural assumption, and I think fans just knew Tony was still alive during this time, and with his being the leader of the Avengers, they were hopeful we might see him again, even if it were just to feed into Captain America: Civil War.

But in the end, the film focused only on Natasha and her “family,” and the film’s writer and director each spoke out to explain why.

In a recent interview with CB’s Phase Zero podcast, writer Eric Pearson explained the confusion surrounding the Iron Man rumors, saying:

“I feel bad for the person who asked me this the other day because I said ‘there was never any discussion,’ but I do remember now that one version of the script prior to me literally had written into it ‘The end moment of Civil War with Tony and Natasha,’ but it was old footage. It would have been, ‘Hey audience, remember where we are, we’re going to key off of this moment of her.’”

He went on to add:

“I remember when those rumors came out I was in London in our War Room office and I just looked around and was like ‘Are we? Am I supposed to be? I have the script right here, Tony Stark’s not in it.’ Everyone was like ‘No, no.’…I don’t know where it came from unless somebody got a very old version with this kind of scene, which wasn’t even a new scene. I don’t know, I don’t know where it came from.”

It makes sense why they didn’t just throw that in. Everyone knows what happened next, and the scene may have just stolen focus from the film. As far as why we didn’t see Hawkeye either, the film’s director Cate Shortland explained to Total Film:

“Initially, there was discussions about everything, about all of the different characters. What we decided was, and I think [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige] was really great, he said, ‘She doesn’t need the boys.’ We didn’t want it to feel like she needs the support. We want her to stand alone. And she does.”

It would have been a little more sensical to integrate Hawkeye rather than Iron Man, but it also makes total sense that if Clint were trying to lie low, he would not have gone to hang out with another Avenger. The film ended up being really good, and Natasha did stand on her own, while highlighting the star power of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.

Would you have liked to have seen Iron Man or Hawkeye make an appearance in the film?
