Danny DeVito is among the crew of Hollywood actors who have worked on one of the number of Batman movies over the past few decades. He played The Penguin in director Tim Burton’s 1992 film, Batman Returns, and with the role being recast in this year’s The Batman from writer and director Matt Reeves, Vanity Fair decided to hook DeVito up to a lie detector test to see what he thought.
When asked about his thoughts on actor Colin Farrell’s portrayal of The Penguin, DeVito said:
“I love Colin. He’s a terrific guy. My Penguin was better.”
DeVito then looked over at the polygraph examiner and asked, “Was that the truth? It most certainly was. In my opinion.”
Both actors personified the Gotham villain in distinctly different contexts, with DeVito embodying Tim Burton’s gothic camp style, and Farrell playing a serious take in the moody noir brought to the screen by Reeves. In my opinion, they were both great. I remember that DeVito said he would have returned to the role if asked by Reeves when the movie was shooting, so maybe he’s just a little miffed to see someone else take on the part he had only seen himself play.
