Review: STAR WARS: TALES OF THE JEDI Episode I – Ahsoka Tano is Born

During Star Wars Celebration last week, Dave Filoni was kind enough to share the very first episode of his upcoming animated anthology series Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. The stories the series will tell will span many years over the course of the franchise. This first episode puts a focus on the birth of Ahsoka Tano and an important experience she had in the first year of her life.

When the story was initially explained, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really all that excited about this particular story. I didn’t think it would have much substance, but dammit, I should’ve known better not to underestimate the storytelling talent of David Filoni.

The guy just gets the Star Wars universe and this first episode of Tales of the Jedi was a beautifully made story, that put Ahsoka, her family, and her tribes in an incredibly intense situation. The one thing I didn’t expect was the emotion that came out of it, the story certainly has the power to move fans.

Look, I love the Star Wars animated shows, The Clone Wars and Rebels, and I actually dig the visual animation style. I know that some people aren’t into it, or are tired of it, but in the end, it’s not about that… it’s about the story, and Filoni knows how to tell a freakin’ great Star Wars story with depth. And sure, baby Ahsoka is absolutely adorable and the fans are going to melt over her, but this series is the start of her long and incredible journey.

I’m not going to get into any details on how the story plays out because it’s something fans will want to experience for themselves. But, I will say that Ahsoka was special from the very beginning, and the people around her knew that she was destined to do great things. I’ve also included a couple official photos from the first episode that were released.

When talking about Ahsoka’s story, Filoni said: “I thought of this adventure for Ahsoka for a long time, and it’s interesting to see how it’s evolved. Years ago, I never would have imagined that it was sprung from a branch of a tree that had anything to do with a guy [like] Din Djarin, or a child that looks like Yoda. It’s a great lesson for me on how, when you have other creatives like Jon Favreau, they can help lend such dimension and depth to what you’re doing.”

This first episode got me incredibly excited for this show. In fact, it’s now one of my most anticipated. Filoni also shared a trailer for the series and it was one of the most exciting things that I saw at Star Wars Celebration. I’m excited to watch the rest of the episodes for this series!
