Watch STAR WARS Fans React To THE PHANTOM MENACE on Its Opening Night in 1999

watch-star-wars-fans-react-to-the-phantom-meance-on-its-opening-night-in-1999-social.jpg

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace opened in theaters on May 19th, 1999. The fans waited a long time to get more Star Wars stories from George Lucas and when it finally came it was met with mixed reactions. Some fans loved it, while others were disappointed.

I’ve got an old news report here for you to watch that features the fans coming out of a midnight screening of the film at the old Burbank AMC theater offering up their reactions for the movie and as you’ll see, more people actually liked it than hated it. This is actually the theater that I saw the movie in when it came out, so this brings back some memories.

Before going into the theater to watch the movie, one fan said, “There’s no way it’s gonna be a disappointment.” When the reporter asks crowd of fans if they expect to see a “lousy movie,” the line outside the theater yells, “No!”

Obviously, some fans were disappointed. One fan admits, “I mean, I don’t want to bag the movie, but I really didn’t think I cared about the characters. It really didn’t have any personality.” Another said, “Thumbs way down. I think I deserve a public apology from George Lucas.”

There were some fans who loved it, though. One fan told the reporter, “I liked the special effects, I thought Lucas did a really good job.”

Another said, “It was so intense. I mean, my heart was beating, it’s still beating now. I just screamed, literally.”

Finally, a guy dressed up as Darth Maul said, “It was amazing, it was everything I thought it was gonna be and more.”

Out of the 19 moviegoers that were interviewed, ten said they “loved it,” seven “liked it,” and two “hated it.”

What was your reaction to The Phantom Menace as soon as the end credits started rolling?

Light Up Your Room with a Special Beam Cannon Lamp

special_beam_cannon_lamp.jpg

When Piccolo unleashes the Special Beam Cannon in Dragon Ball Z, it’s an amazing moment. It leads to the defeat of Radditz and the first of many deaths for Goku in the series. Well, apparently there’s a lamp that looks like this move and it is amazing. You have a beautiful statue of Piccolo and out of his fingers, the light bulb comes out to look like the signature move. This appears to not be an officially licensed product and is only available through third-party sellers on Amazon for high prices, but it’s still cool to think of having this on display somewhere.

Check Out the Cover Art For Upcoming Editions of ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR II

Archie Vs. Predator (2015) is getting its sequel this summer, with Alex De Campi writing and Robert Hack as the artist. We’ve got the cover art for the new editions of the comic for you to checkout, but first, here’s a quote from Archie Comics co-president Alex Segura regarding the series:

“The first question people are going to be asking is, ‘But…how?’ and, for my money, that’s the best mind-set to have when you’re talking crossovers. Alex de Campi wrote an iconic, legendary mashup — but, I have to tell you, her idea for the sequel goes above and beyond. The fact that we got superstar Robert Hack to bring it to life is sure to make the end result one of the most bonkers, visceral and off-the-wall events in comic book history. Strap in. This is gonna be fun as hell.”

Well that should definitely pump you up for this graphic novel! Check out the art below and let us know if you’re already a fan of Archie Vs. Predator, or if you’ll be checking it out!

AVENGERS: ENDGAME VFX Artists Credit THE LORD OF THE RINGS Films For Inspiration In Working on the Movie

avengers-endgame-final-battle-1.jpg

Weta Digital is the incredible VFX team behind many of the most amazing visual effects you’ve seen in films over the last 25 years. Their most recent piece of work was on the worldwide hit movie, knocking out all the box office records, Avengers: Endgame. In a recent interview with cinemablend, Matt Aiken, the visual effects supervisor over at Weta, was asked if there were any non-marvel films that inspired the work they did on Endgame, specifically the final battle. Aiken responded by saying:

A bunch of us, myself included, go all the way back to Lord of the Rings at WETA Digital. That had giant battle sequences, predominantly CG battle sequences as well. It was interesting, we really felt like we were back in the territory of Helm’s Deep and the Battle of Pelennor Fields at times on this film, which was fun for a bunch of us who’d worked on those films as well. And we’re using some of the same techniques and software in Lord of the Rings. We’re using MASSIVE, which is the crowd-simulation software that we developed in house at WETA Digital to do those battle scenes for Lord of the Rings to do the crowd simulation work for Endgame as well. It’s a way more developed version of that, but it’s still plenty of the same software.

Aiken went on to talk about learning from another film, but still keeping the individuality of the film you’re working on, and making it look unique to the needs of the film:

And then things we learned from Lord of the Rings that we were able to bring to bear here as well. The one thing we always like to do is when we have these big battle scenes is not to just treat everybody the same, so in Endgame, we’ve got multiple different flavors of army on both sides, both Thanos’ side and our heroes’ side. We’ve got Wakandans, Asgardians, Ravagers, sorcerers on the heroes’ side, and we’ve got Chitauri, Outriders, Sakaarans, the Black Order on Thanos’ side. And we want to preserve the individual fighting styles for each of these sub-armies, if you like, so that when we have a clash, we can tell if it’s a bunch of Outriders dealing to some sorcerers, or maybe we’ve got some Wakandans who are able to take on a whole lot of Chitauri.

That’s pretty awesome. Both LOTR and the Avengers sagas were amazing, and it’s just incredible to me what can be created by filmmakers and visual effects artists.

Lindsey Stirling Combined the Themes from ENDGAME and GAME OF THRONES

lindsey_stirling_endgame_thrones.jpg

Avengers: Endgame and the final season of Game of Thrones mark the ends of two cultural giants. To celebrate, the talented dancing violinist Lindsey Stirling has mashed up the main themes from both songs for a new song she’s calling “EndGame of Thrones – War of Music,” or at least that’s the name of her video.

In the video we see Stirling dressed up like Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones and what I can only imagine is an original character of hers to represent Marvel. It’s really interesting how the two songs are fused into one, so check it out and let me know what themes you’d like combined.

Check Out this Incredible POKEMON Fan Art That Plays with the Types of the Original Starters

Fan art can be incredible and many times it gives us things that are just as cool if not cooler than the original content. One example is some fan art from Reddit user abz-art.

This artist has recently shared some amazing art that includes the final evolutions of the original starters (Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise) imagined with swapped typings. Venusaur becomes a Water-type, Charizard is now Grass-type, and Blastoise is a Fire-type.

The art is incredible with Venusaur’s flower turning into more of a coral reef, Charizard’s wings are branches and leaves, and Blastoise has a volcano on his back! I love this art and so I dug through some of his history and found he did the same type of swapping for the legendary birds: Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Abz-art has also drawn some really cool ideas for potential evolutions of Eevee. Oh, and Pichu was turned into a Dragon-type mouse.

Check out the starters and some of my favorites below.

THE HATE YOU GIVE US Star Amandla Stenberg Joins FEAR Reboot for Universal

amandla-stenberg-as-starr-carter-in-the-hate-u-give.jpg

Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) has been cast in the reboot of the 1996 movie Fear, originally starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg. It was the age-old story of boy meets girl, they fall in love, boy turns into a raging psycho stalker because nobody ever put him in his place.

Talk about a movie that absolutely doesn’t need a remake. The problem with movies like this is that so many girls and women know a guy who has gone psycho and scared them and made them feel afraid for their lives at one point or another. It’s not as fun as you’d think it is to see it played out on the screen. It should come with a PTSD warning.

But just like Witherspoon was, Stenberg is a great actress just getting her start who can pay her dues and play some stupid roles, then get to choose what she wants to do in the future. We will let you know when we find out who gets to play the hot lunatic boyfriend.

Did you like the original movie? Will you be seeing this reboot?

DESCENT INTO AVERNUS Will Feature a New Familiar Called an Abyssal Chicken

As Dungeons & Dragons players and DMs dive into the Nine Hells in Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus, they’re sure to be treated to a wide variety of ferocious and demonic monsters that they haven’t met before. To one-up all of those though, Chris Perkins announced that a new familiar is on its way as well called the abyssal chicken. If you’re wondering what it will look like, just think of a chicken from hell and that seems to be the consensus. Here’s what Perkins told CB at D&D Live 2019: The Descent:

One of my favorite monsters is actually a stupid thing called the Abyssal chicken. It’s exactly what you think it is. It is a chicken out of the abyss. But what sold me on it were two things. One, you can make it a familiar. Two, the artwork kicks ass. The art for it basically sold the creature. If the piece of art didn’t look as good as it does, it probably wouldn’t be in the book.

I’m now very intrigued to see what the artwork for this creature is. I’m imagining something like Heihei from Moana but with lava rock and flames consuming the body. What are you going to name your abyssal chicken?
