Elevenses! A Fun Feast for Quarantined Geeks (and Their Children)

elevenses.jpg

Here is a list of things kids love: baked goods, themed meals, costumes, indoor picnics, any meal referred to as a feast. A comment on an article I read about stress baking last week got me thinking about Hobbit food, and since Nico and I read The Hobbit a little while back, I thought a Hobbit-style feast would be super fun on yet another cooped-up day, especially this kind of grey day with the threat of rain. There are myriad resources for Middle-Earth cooking on the web (so many lembas bread recipes!), and there is even this amazing cookbook that I will definitely check out of the library come September or whenever this nightmare is over, but It may take some searching to find recipes that match up with the ingredients you have on hand. I also halved or quartered most of the recipes to prevent waste, especially since we were trying most of them for the first time, and you never know how that is going to go over with kids.

We made this almond honey cake, because Beorn serves Thorin’s company honey cake, and because I thought the combination of orange zest and spice would be delicious. It was good, the texture was super moist and crumbly, but the glaze made it too sweet for me. I wish I had kicked up the ginger a notch. This was Finn’s absolute favorite though, and he had an absolute blast helping me make it. I did quarter this recipe, then baked it in two buttered and floured mini cocottes for about twenty minutes.

We also made these Scottish oatcakes, because I very much associate oatcakes with anything elf-related. I topped them with these weird canned strawberries and some whipped cream I had on hand. I did not half this recipe, but I wish I had because even though they had fun rolling out and cutting the dough, neither of my kids would touch them. I thought they were pretty good though. I did substitute butter for the margarine the recipe calls for. If you don’t have buttermilk (which, it’s just kind of a weird fluke that I did), add about a teaspoon of vinegar to a quarter cup of milk and let it sit for about ten minutes before you add it to the dough.

I also made three quiche in 6-inch tart pans. I sort of winged the recipe, but I used 3/4 cups flour, 5 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, and two tablespoons of iced water for the pastry, and two slices of crumbled bacon, two green onions, a bit of cheese, three eggs, and some milk for the filling. Nico absolutely devoured the quiches, which was was good, because it’s healthier than the cakes, but I was a bit bummed not to have any leftovers.

Lastly, I saw a lot of mentions of hash, often with mushrooms and leeks, in the lists of Hobbit foods I found online, so I threw together a quick hash with one potato, a couple breakfast sausages, two mushrooms, and green onions instead of leeks. Just chop everything up and bang it around in a frying pan with some oil and salt and pepper until it’s ready. Easy and delicious.

Don’t forget a fancy beverage. Hobbits love their ale, so I would suggest ginger ale or root beer, but anything apple cidery would be great as well.

While I got the table ready and queued up The Fellowship of the Ring (so many Hobbit food scenes near the beginning!), I gave Nico the task of costuming his brother. The results were a little different than I expected (my husband asked if the theme was 90s boy band), and things got a little touchy when Finn wanted to wear a stormtrooper helmet, but in the end we had a great time, and I’m already thinking of other themed feasts. Harry Potter seems obvious, but this idea seems adaptable to anything your kids are into.

Kino Lorber unveils art house digital theatrical experience

With most theaters shut down around the country in the midst of coronavirus concerns, Kino Lorber is launching a virtual theatrical experience called Kino Marquee to help art house theaters shuttered by the coronavirus outbreak to serve their audiences and generate revenue by viewing films digitally, beginning with Bacurau.

Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles and starring Sônia Braga (The Jesus Rolls) and Udo Kier (Dragged Across Concrete), the film won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2019 and went on to play Toronto and New York Film Festivals to much acclaim. It was a New York Times “Critics Pick” by Manohla Dargis who called it “an exhilarating fusion of high and low,” and The New Yorker lauded the film as “a boldly inventive political fantasy.”

The film was set to open at New York’s  Film at Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music and Jacob Burns Film Center before the shutdowns and now audiences will be able to support those theaters by viewing the film through Kino Marquee, which will set up designated virtual screening rooms for each film and theater that can be booked from Fridays to Thursdays, with revenue split between the distributor and exhibitor.

The current list of theaters on board include:

“When theaters started to close, we at Kino Lorber turned our thoughts to how we could collaborate with our independent theater partners across the country,” Wendy Lidell, SVP of theatrical distribution at Kino Lorber, said in a statement. “We cannot release the kinds of films we do without their support. Of course we wanted to find a way to keep our current film release in front of audiences, but to do so in a way that would also benefit our exhibition partners. We want to help ensure that these theaters will be able to reopen their doors after this crisis passes. The Kino Marquee program offers an opportunity for theaters to generate revenue while their doors are closed.”

Kino Marquee will be hosted on the company’s new VOD service, Kino Now, although access to the virtual screening rooms will not be available through said site, but rather through theaters’ promotions of the films via the site, where viewers can buy virtual tickets and receive a link offering an admission to the online screening rooms.

“As a company whose mantra has always been ‘experience cinema’ we’re keen to help our exhibition partners maintain their visibility and value in launching the whole media career of the carefully curated films we all care so much about,” Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber said in a statement. “We’re all in this together and will come through it stronger with the support of the film loving communities our theaters serve.”

Exclusive: Jesse Eisenberg Discusses Now You See Me Sequel Plans!

Exclusive: Jesse Eisenberg discusses Now You See Me character, sequel plans!

It’s been nearly four years since audiences last saw the heist thriller franchise Now You See Me on the big screen with the 2016 sequel and despite various repots that year about development on a third installment, no word has since been announced its progress. ComingSoon.net got the chance to chat with series star Jesse Eisenberg (Resistance) to discuss possibilities of a sequel and the development of his character across both films.

While discussing his latest films Resistance and Vivarium, we asked Eisenberg if he had heard word about any movement on the long-awaited third installment in the heist series, and much to fans’ dismay, the 36-year-old actor confirmed neither he nor his fellow members have heard anything just yet.

“I hear occasionally from my friends, the other actors in the movies, that ‘Oh, I’ve heard something’ and I go ‘Oh really? What’d you hear?’, but all we’ve got is ‘Oh, I hear they’re still working on it,’” Eisenberg revealed. “I’ve heard nothing, I wonder what the statute of limitations on that kind of stuff is, because maybe if enough time passes, there might be a decreasing level of interest in it.”

The actor, who portrays the ostensible leader and somewhat arrogant illusionist J. Daniel Atlas, did assure that he’d happily return to the series if further development were to get underway on a third installment, describing them as “fun movies to make” and saying he and his co-stars all “loved” working on them both.

“I just love my character, I got to help create my character,” Eisenberg discussed. “For the first movie, there was a kind of blueprint of the character, so I said I kind of want to play this brilliant but arrogant magician, because it’s such a fun thing to do. As somebody who’s more of a timid performer, to be able to play such a brash performer was like the best thing, psychologically, for me to do.”

The franchise, which began with 2013’s Now You See Me, follows a group of magicians and illusionists named The Four Horseman as they travel the globe pulling off bank robberies and heists during their shows to enact justice on those using their money for improper means. The debut featured an ensemble cast of Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson (Zombieland: Double Tap), Isla Fisher (Arrested Development), Dave Franco (6 Underground), Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Endgame), Michael Caine (Tenet) and Morgan Freeman (Angel Has Fallen), and was a box office hit, grossing over $351 million worldwide on a $75 million budget.

Now You See Me 2, which hit theaters in 2016, saw the group forced to go on the run after being exposed by criminal mastermind Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe, Escape From Pretoria) and help him pull off a job stealing a valuable data chip. The sequel swapped out Fisher for Caplan, as the former was pregnant when production was set to begin, and was a similar success at the box office, grossing over $334 million on a $90 million budget.

Reports of a third installment began ahead of the sequel’s release, with Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer stating that early planning was underway and reports stating Caplan and Fisher were both in talks to reprise their roles while Benedict Cumberbatch (Avengers: Endgame) was in talks for an unknown, presumably antagonistic, role. It was also reported that Jon M. Chu (In the Heights) had signed on to helm a threequel after directing the second film, but no news has been revealed in the years since.

Eisenberg can next be seen in the upcoming war biopic Resistance, in which he stars as French Jewish Resistance fighter and iconic mime Marcel Marceau, which will hit select theaters and digital platforms on March 27, and the sci-fi thriller Vivarium, in which he reunites with The Art of Self-Defense co-star Imogen Poots and is set to hit select theaters and digital platforms on March 27.

DC Universe has released a full trailer for Harley Quinn Season 2, which is an incredibly fun and enjoyable animated series. This series should be the inspiration for Harley Quinn movies! This show plays with Harley Quinn and all of the other DC characters in all the right ways. The first season was great and Season 2 looks like it’ll be at least just as good!

The trailer shows off a lot of amusing and irreverent footage and it also teases the long-waited romantic storyline between Harley and Poison Ivy. The trailer also offers our first look at Catwoman, Batgirl and Mr. Freeze in action, who was voiced by Alfred Molina.

The series focuses on Harley Quinn, who has finally broken things off once and for all with the Joker and attempts to make it on her own as the criminal Queenpin of Gotham City. Harley will attempt to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy… the Legion of the Doom.

Funny New Trailer for WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS Season 2 Features Guillermo Becoming a Vampire Slayer

FX has shared a full trailer for the upcoming second season of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s hit vampire comedy series, What We Do in the Shadows. I love this show, and this next season looks like it’s going to be hilarious. The trailer is filled with funny footage that teases the kind of situations that these vampires are going to find themselves in.

The trailer shows us that Guillermo is going to become a vampire hunter, and it also offers our first footage of guest stars Craig Robinson and Haley Joel Osment.

What We Do in the Shadows is “a documentary-style look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of four vampires who’ve “lived” together for hundreds of years in Staten Island. After an unexpected visit from their dark lord and leader, the vampires are reminded of what they were initially tasked with upon their arrival in New York City over a century ago — total and complete domination of the New World. But what exactly is the best way to go about achieving said domination? A vérité camera crew follows along as the vampires set out to answer this query.”

The series stars Matt Berry (The IT Crowd), Kayvan Novak (Early Man), Natasia Demetriou (Year Friends), and Harvey Guillen (The Magicians). Mark Hamill is also supposed to make an appearance this season, which will be cool! You can also expect to see Dave Bautista, Evan Rachel Wood, Danny Trejo, Wesley Snipes, Paul Rubens, and Tilda Swinton, who have all previously played vampire roles.

What We Do in the Shadows season 2 premieres on FX on April 15, 2020.

Deadline is reporting that the Cannes 2020 Film Festival has been postponed. The festival was originally scheduled to take place between May 12 to May 23. The news follows yesterday’s announcement that Cannes has been working on a virtual market plan as a contingency option for the festival. They have not yet officially confirmed if a virtual market will be running this May in place of the physical festival.

Today’s statement from Cannes reads: “At this time of global health crisis, our thoughts go to the victims of the COVID-19 and we express our solidarity with all of those who are fighting the disease.

“Today, we have made the following decision: The Festival de Cannes cannot be held on the scheduled dates, from May 12 to 23. Several options are considered in order to preserve its running, the main one being a simple postponement, in Cannes, until the end of June-beginning of July, 2020.
