Tom Hanks Embarks on a Journey in The Old West in First Look at NEWS OF THE WORLD

Tom Hanks is making his very first western! It’s titled News of the World, and today we have a few first-look photos to share with you.

The story is based on the 2016 novel by Paulette Jiles and is set in 1870 in a region reeling from endless conflict and Hanks takes on the role of Captain Jefferson Kidd, “a widower who travels through the Texas desert to perform a one-man show about true stories from afar. His goal, apart from gathering coins in his cup, is to bring people together and expand their perspective of the world.”

This is obviously a different kind of old west story, but one that sounds like an interesting film worth watching. The movie is being directed by Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips), who tells Vanity Fair, “When the fabric of society is in tatters, you’ve got a character in Kidd, who in his lonely, singular, small way is a thread who connects one community to another.”

It’s explained that on his journey, Kidd “finds his own point of view upended when he discovers the ruins of a smashed carriage in the middle of nowhere, and a lost little girl (Helena Zengel) who is the only survivor. She speaks, but not his language. Figuring out who she is, how she got there, and where she belongs is more dangerous than he anticipates.

“It’s not the first time that the girl has been rescued. As a toddler, she was found and raised by the Kiowa tribe, who are regarded with contempt by most white settlers who are encroaching on the land. She knows the Kiowa only as family, and the language she speaks is theirs.”

Greengrass went on to talk about the story of the film further saying:

“Even though it’s set then, it’s a film about our times. Neighbors and families and communities were in stark and often violent conflict with each other, and Americans needed to decide who they were as Americans.

“That’s what I wanted the film to explore. What’s the road out of this? What’s the road to healing look like? And in this story of this man and this little girl, these two characters, both of them for very different reasons are lost. The story for them is to work out where they each belong and how that works. And that’s what I wanted this Western to do.”

News of the World, due out on December 25th. I’ll be looking forward to watching this!

First Look at Netflix’s Live-Action/CG Animated Series LOST OLLIE From SPIDER-VERSE Director Peter Ramsey

first-look-at-netflixs-live-action:cg-animated-film-lost-ollie-from-spider-verse-director-peter-ramsey-social.jpg

Netflix has shared the first look at their adorable film live-action/GC animated hybrid series Lost Ollie, which is based on William Joyce’s children’s book Ollie’s Odyssey.

The series comes from Peter Ramsey, one of the directors of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and the story follows a ragdoll who searching for the boy who lost him. This image features the lost ragdoll, which is a digital character created by the team at Industrial Light & Magic.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

In the secret realm of toys, there are many mysteries. There is the Code of the Toys, which is as ancient as childhood. There’s also the magic of becoming a child’s favorite, the highest honor in the Toy World.

Made by hand by Billy’s mother, Ollie is a special toy, “a toy who will matter.” He becomes Billy’s best friend, confidant, pal, and yes, Billy’s “favorite.” But there are villains in the Toy World, and Zozo, the clown king, is the most feared. He and his toy henchman (the Creeps) have sworn to steal and imprison favorite toys until they forget their children and become forever lost.

When Ollie is toynapped, Billy must rescue his beloved favorite from Zozo’s subterranean lair in the old Carnival Place, past the park, through the woods, and into the night.

Ramsey is also an executive producer on the project along with Shawn Levy and Josh Barry through their 21 Laps Entertainment banner. The script for the film comes from Shannon Tindle, who wrote the story for Kubo and the Two Strings.

When talking about the Lost Ollie, Teddy Biaselli, Netflix’s director of young adult and family series, said in a blog post:

“Lost Ollie’ is truly an odyssey about two friends trying to reunite in the face of all the dangers that childhood can throw at them. I love this show because it taps into that well of emotion we all feel when we lose something or someone important to us, and the courage we have to find in ourselves to get it back, or to move on.”

We don’t know when exactly the series will premiere, but it will be sometime in 2020.

THE WITCHER Season 2 Photos Offer a First Look at Ciri Looking Like a Badass

We’ve got a couple of new photos from Netflix’s The Witcher Season 2, and they give us our first look at Freya Allan as Ciri in training with a wooden sword. It also features her sporting a new outfit.

Ciri has certainly looks like she’s been toughened up by her experiences in the first season. In case you don’t remember, she was tormented by doppels and the forces of Nilfgaard. Now it looks like she’s ready to kick some ass.

They join returning cast members Henry Cavill, who leads the cast of The Witcher saga in the role of Geralt of Rivia; Anya Chalotra as the sorceress Yennefer; and Joey Batey as the bard Jaskier, who sings the signature ballad “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” from the series.

Other returning cast include MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, Tom Canton as Filavandrel, Lilly Cooper as Murta, Jeremy Crawford as Yarpin Zigrin, Eamon Farren as Cahir, Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz, Terence Maynard as Artorius, Lars Mikkelson as Stregobor, Mimi Ndiweni as Fringilla Vigo, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte as Dara, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, and Therica Wilson Read as Sabrina.

The first season of the series was a big hit with audiences, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a statement:

“The reaction to season one of The Witcher set a high bar for adding new talent for the second season. [Casting director] Sophie Holland and her casting team have once again found the very best people to embody these characters, and in the hands of these accomplished directors, we’re excited to see these new stories come to life.”

Based on the best-selling fantasy series, The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, “a solitary monster hunter who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than the beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.”

Season 2 will be directed by Stephen Surjik (Umbrella Academy) who will direct 201 and 202; Sarah O’Gorman (Cursed) for episodes 203 and 204; Ed Bazalgette (The Last Kingdom) for episodes 205 and 208; and Geeta Patel (Meet The Patels) for episodes 206 and 207.

There are also reports that Netflix has locked in Season 3 of the series, and they are looking at producing spinoff shows.

[Beyond Fest] Synchronic Review: A Mesmerizing Albeit Heavy-Handed Trip

Rating:

8/10

Cast:

Jamie Dornan as Dennis Dannelly

Anthony Mackie as Steve Denube

Ally Ioannides as Brianna Dannelly

Katie Aselton as Tara

Co-Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead; Written by Justin Benson

Synchronic Review:

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have delivered hit after hit in the indie horror world, traversing every subject from body horror to convent life and time-looping madness and with their latest effort, Synchronic, they find themselves offering a unique new take on the time travel genre and while it features plenty of visually stunning imagery and a mesmerizing exploration of existentialism, albeit a bit of a heavy-handed one.

When New Orleans paramedics and longtime best friends Steve and Dennis are called to a series of bizarre and gruesome accidents, they chalk it up to a mysterious new drug found at the scene. But after Dennis’ oldest daughter disappears, Steve stumbles upon a terrifying truth about the supposed psychedelic that will challenge everything he knows about reality — and the flow of time itself.

The directing duo waste no time in establishing the film’s very hypnotic and dreamlike tone, opening it up with a couple trying out the titular drug only to see the horrific effects that can come with it and it’s an intriguing start before introducing viewers to Steve and Dennis and their relationship with one another.

The married man and ladies man friendship dynamic is one utilized plenty of times in the film world and, though seen executed far better in other stories with better-written characters, comes across as mostly believable. Be it the subtle but enjoyable chemistry between Jamie Dornan and Anthony Mackie or Benson and Moorhead’s inherent knack for knowing how to write a close friendship akin to their own, when Steve and Dennis are on-screen together it’s usually a compelling thing to watch.

The problem also arises from this, however, as when the two are apart and the film chooses to focus on one or the other the writing seems to lose its creative balance and clearly favor one over the other. Subjected to constant flashbacks of his time with his wife and daughter before the latter’s disappearance as he comes home from his graveyard shifts, Dornan’s Dennis feels woefully underwritten and largely thrown to the side even when he’s supposedly being given the spotlight. The Irish star doesn’t necessarily deliver a poor performance in the role, but the material he’s given frequently leaves him looking stiff and very wooden.

Once the film finally — and I mean finally, after quite a slow start — gets to its time-traveling element, things become really interesting and Mackie gets the chance to illustrate his effortless charisma and Benson and Moorhead’s somewhat dark sense of humor. The visual depiction of Steve moving through time is such an incredible sight and beautifully thought out, keeping audiences guessing as to just when he’s going to land.

Unfortunately, even with as minimal a time travel plot as the film has in comparison to other genre fare, the film finds itself struggling to stay consistent with the rules it’s creating or even make some of them clear enough for the viewer to moderately comprehend. Its seven-minute lasting period seems to only exist when it’s essential to the plot, the nature at which someone or something can come back from the past goes back and forth from a more simplistic explanation to then throwing the rule out the window for a few devastating turns and an Inception-esque ending.

Another of the film’s problems arises in its reflection on life and death and humanity’s place in the world throughout time, which begins subtle and succinct but eventually progresses into far-too-on-the-nose explanations that feel almost as though the filmmakers could have just put up title cards with their same sentiments or hosted a TED Talk to express their ideas. It starts to feel less like a poignant and moving exploration and debate of the soul worthy of the indie genre and more like a pretentious explanation a blockbuster film would deliver to its viewer to make sure a general audience understands what the filmmaker is getting at.

Synchronic may not break Benson and Moorhead’s winning streak, as it’s still a fairly compelling new take on the time travel genre and features a solid performance from Mackie, stellar direction from the duo and some beautiful scenery, but for those unfamiliar with their previous work, its pacing and heavy-handed dialogue may prove to be a bit of a slog to navigate through.
