Amazon to Pick Up Action Driving Flick FUEL Starring Jurnee Smollett

In a heated bidding war, Amazon is in final talks to pick up the pitch for an action flick called Fuel that is set to star Jurnee Smollett, who has made her mark in the last year with Lovecraft Country and Birds of Prey. Smollett will executive produce the project along with Lovecraft Country EP Misha Green, as well as Kat Wood, who is set to write the film.

Deadline reports the plan for the project is “to develop this as a vehicle for Smollett to play a wheel woman, a fresh take on a familiar character. The film is an action-packed female empowerment story that will subvert the relationship between cars and masculinity. The heroine is a getaway driver who is coerced into working for a criminal and breaking all the rules she set out for herself.”

This sounds like a fun new role for Smollett, who is just great in everything she does. She can next be seen in the sci-fi thriller Escape From Spiderhead opposite Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, which is currently in post-production.

While still awaiting the start of production on the fourth installment of his Keanu Reeves-led franchise, John Wick director Chad Stahelski has set another future project in his slate as New Line Cinema has won the auction for his action thriller pitch Classified, according to Deadline.

The film, which is based on a story from Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension duo Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan, is described as a high-octane thriller mixing the tones of Die Hard and Indiana Jones and is set in a secret government bunker, akin to the iconic warehouse from the latter franchise, containing relics secretly recovered during World War II that are more powerful and dangerous than ever imagined.

In addition to sitting in the director’s chair, Stahelski is set to produce the film via his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner alongside the label’s Jason Spitz and Alex Young and Underground’s Trevor Engelson, while sources note that deals with other producers are currently being finalized.

After two decades of working in the stunt world for major Hollywood blockbusters, most notably as a stunt double for Keanu Reeves and Martial Arts Stunt Coordinator in the original Matrix trilogy, Stahelski made his directorial debut alongside longtime collaborator David Leitch on the 2014 hit actioner John Wick. As Leitch went on to helm installments in other blockbuster franchises, namely Deadpool 2 and Hobbs and Shaw, Stahelski has stuck with the Reeves-fronted series and directed both sequels and is also producing the spin-off film Ballerina and series The Continental.

Aside from the Wick series, Stahelski has a full dance card as he has been attached to a reboot of the cult classic Highlander for four years as well as being set to helm Lionsgate’s urban fantasy drama Arcana and comic book pic Analog and produce the American remake of The Man From Nowhere.

Wild Cards: George R.R. Martin’s Series Adaptation Moving From Hulu to Peacock

The series adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s book series Wild Cards is officially moving from Hulu to Peacock, according to Variety. It was announced in 2018 that the project would be heading to Hulu with Andrew Miller previously attached as writer and executive producer. Miller is reportedly no longer involved with the adaptation and a search is ongoing for a new writer.

The original plan was for Hulu to develop two shows set within the Wild Cards universe. No further details have yet been released about what Peacock’s vision for the long-in-development project will be.

In the series, an alien pathogen known as the Wild Card virus is released over Manhattan in 1946, altering the course of human history. The virus rewrites DNA, mutating its survivors. A lucky few are granted awe-inspiring superpowers, while the sad majority are left with often repulsive physical deformities.

Martin is executive producing the project along with Melinda Snodgrass and Vince Gerardis, Martin’s manager. Martin and Snodgrass edit the Wild Card book series.

Martin previously described the series as follows: “Wild Cards is a series of books, graphic novels, games… but most of all it is a universe, as large and diverse and exciting as the comic book universes of Marvel and DC (though somewhat grittier, and considerably more realistic and more consistent), with an enormous cast of characters both major and minor. There are thousands of stories to be told in the world of the Wild Cards, and UCP hope to be able to tell many of them… Only one thing I can say for (almost) sure. You will be seeing Croyd Crenson, no matter shape the eventual show or shows ends up taking. It wouldn’t be Wild Cards without the Sleeper.”

The first volume of the Wild Cards series was published in 1987, and was a finalist for that year’s Hugo Award, ultimately losing to Alan Moore’s Watchmen. Translations and reprints of many of the Wild Cards books and stories have been published around the globe, in France, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Russia, Japan, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Comic books, graphic novels, and role-playing games have also chronicled the adventures of the aces and jokers of the WC universe. Over 40 authors contributed to the series when the books were first released. The most recent entry in the series, Knaves Over Queens, was released earlier in 2019. The original idea behind the books came from Martin’s experience as a gamemaster in the RPG Superworld.

Let’s Talk About MIGHTY MORPHIN #5

mighty_morphin#5.jpg

Mighty Morphin #5 dropped today from Ryan Parrott and Marco Renna. You won’t want to miss what happens as we learn how Matt came to be the new Green Ranger under Grace Sterling. You can grab your copy of the comic from local comic shops or if you prefer digital comics, you can grab them from comiXology (affiliate link), Google Play, iBooks, and Madefire. Seriously, if you haven’t read it yet, this is your last chance to turn back.

The New Green Ranger’s identity has been revealed. Now, for the first time ever, discover their top secret origin… and what comes next.

spoiler_alert.png

This issue is all about how Matt became the Green Ranger and what he’s been doing leading up to his broadcast announcement in the last issue. We see what it was like for him when he first arrived and fought Zedd for the Chaos Crystal. We get to see Grace trying to be a mentor while drinking what I assume is coffee out of a mug with a chibi Zedd on it that is adorable.

Of course, being a Ranger really takes a lot of time, especially when you’re a Ranger that needs a lot of practice as you’re not a big fighter. Therefore, Matt quits the football team which doesn’t make his parents happy. He says he’s volunteering, but you can tell they’re worried. Well, his mom is upset about how he’s going to get into college and his dad seems worried that Matt’s not getting into trouble. The trick is that Matt keeps getting beat up in training and Grace is having her people go pretty hard on him.

Eventually, Matt gets introduced to the Dragonzord that Billy has been helping Grace’s people modify for Matt. Matt then ends up having a small chat with Kimberley and almost tells her, but she has to go do Ranger stuff. Fast forward to the big fight with the Chaos Putty and that mess. Matt stays a little longer than the other Rangers and goes to defend some of the citizens of Angel Grove before being teleported back to Prometheus where Grace is trying to get everything situated in a very big state of emergency. Matt doesn’t like that so many people are just left out in the city on their own and eventually convinces Grace to let him tell everyone. The thought is that if people know it’s him, they’ll come to trust them more and calm down. Not terrible logic.

I can’t wait for the next issue when we get to move forward. It was nice to see Matt’s side of things, but I’m just too worried about what the heck is going to happen!

Pepe Le Pew Creator Chuck Jones’s Daughter Disagrees with the Character Being Canceled

pepe-le-pew-creator-chuck-jones-daughter-disagrees-with-the-character-being-canceled.jpg

As you’ve heard by now, there’s been a lot of controversy over the classic Looney Tunes character Pepe Le Pew. The character has been cut from Warner Bros. upcoming film Space Jam: A New Legacy. The news came after New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow called out the cartoon character for adding to “rape culture.”

Pepe Le Pew was created by legendary animator Chuck Jones, and his daughter Linda Jones is not happy about the character being canceled. She explains to TMZ that the character was never meant to be interpreted as a rape-y character, but “the times have caught up with him to make it seem that way.”

Linda goes on to explain that the original running gag with Pepe, was “never meant to be predatory… it was more about how much he stunk as a suitor, despite thinking he was desirable.” She admits that it doesn’t look good with today’s standards, but insists the people “who were watching him in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s were NOT thinking of that dynamic as normalizing rape culture.”

She goes on to say that her dad “was a super liberal dude, and was never out to hurt people.” The whole point and purpose of the character was meant to be “pure comedy.” She also says Pepe “never raped another character on the show.”

Linda went on to suggest the studio rebrand the character that would capture “the spirit her father intended,” She says they should “write him as a perpetual job-seeker who keeps getting rejected, but constantly changes up his routine thinking he’s the perfect candidate.”

I loved watching Looney Tunes with my mom as a kid. That was her favorite cartoon and that love for these characters rubbed off on me and I have wonderful memories watching the classic series with my mom. However, I don’t care if Pepe doesn’t show up in the upcoming movie or isn’t used in any future cartoons. I don’t really like any of the new Looney Tunes stuff that has been released in recent years.
