Jeffrey Wright Discusses The Watcher’s Role in Marvel’s What If?

Jeffrey Wright Discusses Development of The Batman

Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright (The Batman, Westworld) is set to play The Watcher in Marvel’s upcoming What If…? series coming to Disney+ later this year. In a recent interview with Disney’s D23 Magazine (via The Direct), Wright spoke about what role The Watcher will serve in the show, and just how it may connect to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“In the comics, he’s an observer – and then some,” Wright said when asked about The Watcher. “Here, in the first season, he starts off as an observer, but he gradually becomes more compelled by what he watches.” Wright would go on to say that The Watcher could have way more possibilities when it comes to showing up in future television shows or films.

“There are infinite possibilities with this series within the MCU. I’m open to all of it,” Wright explained. “One thing I think we’re realizing with Marvel and Kevin Feige’s leadership is that these are broad, broad canvasses they’re painting on. I don’t even try to anticipate, so I’m just open to all of it – as The Watcher would be.”

Most notably, Marvel’s What If…? will feature the late Chadwick Boseman, who was able to reprise his role as T’Challa, also known as the Black Panther, for the show. His episode will revolve around T’Challa being abducted by the Reavers that took Peter Quill (Star-Lord) in The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Every story in the show will be non-canonical, as the stories will feature some wildly different outcomes from their actual events in the MCU.

The original What if comic book series debuted in 1977 and 200 issues have been published over time. The stories ranged from implausible scenarios to more humored-filled takes. It’s a great way for Marvel to use the streaming service to tell more out-of-the-box stories unachievable through live-action.

Charlize Theron to Produce a Big Wave Female Surfing Film with MULAN Director Niki Caro

charlize-theron-to-produce-a-big-wave-female-surfing-film-with-mulan-director-niki-caro.jpg

Charlize Theron is teaming up again with Netflix to produce a new feature film inspired by female big wave surfers. Mulan director Niki Caro has been hired to helm the movie which is inspired by some of the “top female surfers who are fighting for the right to compete in big-wave contests.”

The movie is based on the New York Times Magazine article The Fight For Gender Equality In One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth by Daniel Duane and the women surfers Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms, and Keala Kennelly.

The story for the film will follow “four women who form a powerful bond as they surf the world’s most dangerous spots and fight for the right to compete in big-wave contests.”

The script for the film is being written by Becky Johnston. I love watching big wave surfers do their thing. I enjoy surfing, and the tallest wave I’ve ever suffered was about 8-feet tall. It scared the shit out of me! Just thinking about riding down a 30 to 50+ foot wave makes my palms sweat.

I love watching big wave surfers ride them, though! It’s incredible what they do, and I respect the hell out of it. We don’t get a lot of films that revolve around surfing these days, so it’s great to see that this movie is getting made, and I’m looking forward to checking out.

LOKI Series Creators Wanted to Do “Something Crazier” Than WANDAVISION and “Have Wide-Reaching Ramifications Across the MCU”

loki-series-creators-wanted-to-do-something-crazier-than-wandavision-and-have-wide-reaching-ramifications-across-the-mcu.jpg

While we wait for the upcoming Marvel series Loki to drop on Disney+, the team behind the creation of the series discuss what they were looking to do with it. One of their goals was to do something crazier than what WandaVision did.

During an interview with Total Film/GamesRadar, Loki lead writer Michael Waldron explained:

“It is a big crack of the bat, a big swing. Our writers’ room was next to WandaVision’s. And you’re like, ‘That show looks so fucking good. We’ve got to do something crazier! We’ve got to step on the gas, because we know that what they’re doing is so cool.’ We tried to take chances every step of the way.”

It’s always fun to see Marvel take chances and try new and unconventional things, judging from what I’ve seen in the trailers for Loki, there’s a lot of that in this series. It looks wild! Series star Tom Hiddleston said:

“There’s a propulsive momentum to [the show], which is about trying to find out more information. There’s a man-on-the-run quality to Loki, and he is caught in a complex new labyrinth, and is trying to find his way around without exposing himself to vulnerability or exploitation.”

The series also will introduce the Time Variance Authority who deal with fractures in the timeline, and apparently, Loki created a lot of problems with that timeline. So, Owen Wilson’s character, Mobius, recruits Loki to help fix his mistakes. In regards to the character Mobius, Wilson said:

“Mobius is a detective in the TVA. The way Mobius fits into the story is that he’s a little bit like Nick Nolte getting Eddie Murphy out of jail in 48 Hrsto help him investigate. Working with him, of course, is a little bit of a chess match to gain his trust, and Loki seeing how far he can go with Mobius. And who’s manipulating whom? And whose purposes ultimately are going to be served?”

One of the things that a lot of fans are interested in seeing is how the events of Loki will affect the rest of the MCU. We know that the film will tie into Doctor Strange in The Multiverse Madness, we just don’t know to what extent that it will be. Waldron, the writer of Loki, was also brought in to write the Doctor Strange sequel and he confirmed that Loki will have wide-reaching ramifications across the MCU”:

“That would just be crazy conjecture. All of these stories, in their own way, are interconnected, and have ramifications. I think that certainly our aim with the Loki series was for it to have wide-reaching ramifications across the MCU moving forward. So, you know, was I having to clean up some of the messes that I made [with Loki]? Maybe so.”

I’m excited to see what these ramifications in the MCU will be. As for the future of Loki beyond the series, when asked if there will be a Season 2 or a follow-up, Hiddleston said:

“At this point, I have learned that for me to have any expectations is futile and a fool’s errand. Having said goodbye to the character once, twice, three times, I do not know what the future holds. But I’m excited to find out. I think we could never have seen 10 years ahead.

“However, that would be to underestimate the intelligence of Kevin Feige! Maybe he did see into the future, and he predicted all this, and, in fact, he works for the TVA, and reality is unfolding as it should, and we’re all just along for the ride…”

Loki launches on Disney+ on June 9th.
