Netflix’s Live Action AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Will Be Deeper and Have More Mature Character Arcs

Netflix is deep in development on the live-action adaptation of the fantastic animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. As you might expect, there are going to be some changes as they adapt the series for live-action, and one of these changes will be the tone.

The animated series had a lighter tone with the characters and the story, but according to actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who is playing Iroh of the Fire Nation, the uncle to Prince Zuko who watches out for his banished nephew, this adaptation is going to be deeper and more mature:

“Let’s be frank, the first season of the animated series was geared toward little kids, but as the books went on, the themes became way more mature and you still have that whimsical quality, but the themes were so much deeper and the character arcs were so much more mature. That quality is what they’re trying to bring into the first season.”

I’m ok with that. What matters most to me is that they actually do the story justice. The creative team has a perfect blueprint to follow, so there’s no excuse to mess it up. But, sometimes these creative types find a way.

The creative team behind the series includes Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow), who is writing the series and acting as showrunner. Kim will also executive produce the show alongside Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Michael Goi, and Roseanne Liang. The directors of the series include Jabar Raisani, Goi, and Liang.

As for the cast, it includes Gordon Cormier as Aang; Kiawentiio as Katara; Ian Ousley as Sokka; and Daniel Dae Kim has signed on to play the character Fire Lord Ozai.

Are you excited about this upcoming series? Do you think it’ll be good?
