Rian Johnson’s STAR WARS Trilogy Is Confirmed to Still Be Happening, But Not Anytime Soon

We haven’t heard anything about the Star Wars trilogy that Rian Johnson signed up to make in years. A lot of fans just assumed it was dead, but that’s not the case at all. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed they are still planning to develop that trilogy. The studio is just waiting for Johnson’s schedule to clear up as he’s been keeping himself busy making Knives Out movies.

Kennedy said, “Rian has been unbelievably busy with Knives Out and the deal that he made at Netflix for multiple movies.”

It’s been five years since Johnson signed up for that trilogy, but whether you like it or not, it sounds like one day he is going to make that trilogy.

All we know about Johnson’s trilogy at this point is that it will be completely “separate from the episodic Skywalker saga” and Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never visited. It’s also been confirmed that will not include anything from Knights of the Old Republic.

When previously talking about the trilogy and his excitement for it, Johnson said, “The appeal of it to me is to do a new story told over three movies, to have that kind of canvas, to be in the Star Wars world and to have the feel of a Star Wars film. Let’s tell one story over three movies, where we go to new places and meet new people. It’s a brand new story that feels like a great Star Wars story.”

I love the original films that Johnson makes, and it’ll be interesting to see what he is actually cooking up for this original Star Wars story.
