Hayden Christensen Says The OBI-WAN KENOBI Lightsaber Duals Are The Same Style as the STAR WARS Prequels

Darth Vader is about to make his first live-action appearance since he made that badass reemergence in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The iconic Star Wars villain will return in Lucasfilm’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series and Hayden Christensen will return to play the character for the first time since Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

During a recent interview with Total Film, Christensen opened up about the series a little bit and teased the lightsaber battles in the series confirming they are more in line with the lightsaber duals we saw in the prequel films. He also says that he’s been enjoying the positivity that the fans have been throwing at the prequel films:

“We’re more in line with the prequels than we are with how the fights are in the original trilogy. These characters have aged, but not that much yet. It’s been a very rewarding experience in that regard, and it’s been really nice to have this wave of positivity over the prequel films. And to see that expression come across has been really nice.”

I think most of us assumed that the lightsaber battles were going to be more like what we saw in prequels, but it’s comforting to have that confirmation. The actor went on to talk about the connective tissue of the saga, saying:

“We’re adding more connective tissue, and so that has to line up. That was something that I was cognizant of, even when we were doing the prequels, in knowing that there’s someone else that played this character before me and after me, and we have to find something that feels right. I spent a lot of time just watching all the Star Wars stuff I could, from the original films to all of the animated shows — Clone Wars, Rebels, and all of that.”

One aspect of the upcoming series that’s pretty crazy and fun to think about is that this will be the first time that Obi-Wan Kenobi will see Anakin Skywalker in his Darth Vader form. I can only imagine how hard that is going to hit him. I mean, he fought alongside him and trained him for years! To see him fully turn himself over to the dark side has got to be hard on Kenobi. When talking about this aspect of the story, Ewan McGregor said:

“I’ve never met Darth Vader. I had rehearsed the scene with Vader, but not with the helmet on or anything like that. When we came to do the scene, when they shouted ‘action’, he had to come from behind me. I turned around, and fucking Darth Vader was coming at me. It was like I was six again. I’d never acted into Vader’s helmet. I’d never looked him in the eye.”

It’s going to be incredibly cool to see Obi-Wan Kenobi and Vader come face to face for the first time! I just keep imagining what that will be like. I think we got a glimpse of it at the very end of the recent trailer for the series.

The story in this new series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The show also stars Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow and executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor, and Joby Harold.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will drop on Disney+ on May 27th!
