Hayden Christensen Talks About Returning to Play Darth Vader in OBI-WAN KENOBI

It’s pretty amazing that after 17 years, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen will be facing off as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader in Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. This is something that fans are incredibly excited about seeing.

Christensen recently opened up about reprising his role of Vader in the Disney+ series, and when asked what it was like for him to put the iconic costume back on, he shared: “Well, without getting into too much detail, it was amazing. It’s a great honor to get to put that suit on.” He went on to say:

“It was mostly a lot of excitement because I had spent enough time with this character and felt like I knew him, and coming back to it felt very natural in a lot of ways. And I was just really excited to get to come in and play Darth Vader at this point in the timeline because it did feel like a natural continuation of your journey with the character. And that was very meaningful for me.”

He went on to discuss the unique opportunity that he found himself in playing this legendary Star Wars villain again, saying:

“The whole experience was very surreal. Just the nature of coming back after all this time. It’s such a unique opportunity — one that both Ewan and I were very grateful for. One of the things I loved so much about working on Star Wars projects is just that shared excitement. That everyone’s real excited to be there. You feel that energy, and that’s a really special thing.”

Christensen won’t reveal much about the series, or even what was going on behind-the-scenes, but he does offer his reaction to seeing McGregor back in the role of Obi-Wan, saying:

“I don’t know what I can share in terms of behind-the-scenes type stuff because I don’t think they want me saying too much. But I can tell you the first time that I saw Ewan as Obi-Wan again, that was a very special moment for me and one that I’ll remember for a very, very long time.”

The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The series also stars Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow and executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor, and Joby Harold.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will drop on Disney+ on May 25th!
