Jon Favreau Made an “Insane” Deal With Lucasfilm After THE MANDALORIAN Became a Huge Success

Jon Favreau made a huge splash in the Star Wars franchise with The Mandalorian. After the Star Wars sequel trilogy wrecked the franchise and tore Star Wars fans apart, Favreau and Dave Filoni swooped in to save the day, franchise, and fandom with The Mandalorian.

According to a recent report from Puck, Favreau was originally only signed on to develop the first season of The Mandalorian. However, after the series blew up in a huge success, Disney and Lucasfilm came to him to extend his deal and apparently that deal he made is “insane.”

We don’t know the details of that deal, as the contract only came up in the larger context of analyzing Disney’s streaming model. All we know is that it’s insane. The article explains:

“Sure, there are exceptions. Favreau originally signed on to do just one season of The Mandalorian, so when it became Disney+’s signature series, he extracted an insane deal to continue, with all kinds of bonuses and incentives for writing or directing individual episodes. But I’m betting even Favreau doesn’t get a cut of the show’s merchandise revenue, meaning Disney likely doesn’t share the windfall from my kid’s many Baby Yoda T-shirts and PJs with the guy who, along with Filoni, actually created the character.”

That last part about the merch revenue is only speculative, but it is hard to believe that Disney would actually give him a cut of that. It would be interesting to see what Favreau’s deal consists of and I imagine Filoni must have a similar deal in place. If not, that would be crazy!

Regardless, it’s got to be nice to be making a living telling awesome stories set in the Star Wars universe!
