Kevin Smith Finishes His Script For TWILIGHT OF THE MALLRATS and Shares New Details

Kevin Smith has taken to social media to announce that he has finished his script for Twilight of The Mallrats, the sequel to his classic 1995 movie, Mallrats. He’s used his time productively since he’s been in lockdown.

The filmmaker also confirmed the return of the characters that we will see in the movie, which includes Brodie (Jason Lee), Rene (Shannen Doherty), Willam (Ethan Suplee), Gwen (Joey Lauren Adams), Brandy (Claire Forlani), T.S. (Jeremy London), Trish (Renée Humphrey), Mr. Svenning (Michael Rooker), LaFours (Sven-Ole Thorsen), and Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Smith). Smith Wrote:

“Thanks in part to the #Quarantine, I finally finished a funny first draft of ‘TWILIGHT OF THE MALLRATS’! 25 years after the original, Brodie Bruce will be back for an unnecessary sequel set against the Mallpocalypse! Rene, Willam, Gwen, Brandy, T.S., Trish, Mr. Svenning, LaFours, and the rebooted @jayandsilentbob are the returning ‘Rats in an Askewniverse imagining about what happens when the sidewalk sales end, and ‘happily ever after’ is easier to say than live! The #jayandsilentbob stuff is some of my favorite conceptual comedy I’ve ever written but the whole script is silly, sentimental, and sweet. And at 98 pages, the story moves like a brakeless bullet train! It’ll be months before we can actually shoot it, but if you wanna know the backstory, I recorded an entire episode about ‘Twilight of the Mallrats’ for my new podcast, ‘Silent Bob Speaks’ – available at That Kevin Smith Club (link in my bio)! And now that *this* script is done, it’s on to a new draft of #moosejaws and then the first draft of the new version of #clerks3,”

Mallrats is one of my favorite Kevin Smith films so I hope that this sequel delivers something fun and good that the fans will enjoy. We also might get to see Bruce Campbell make a cameo appearance in the movie, which would be awesome! When Campell said he’d wanted to be in the movie, Smith replied with the following:

“The role I have for you in Twilight of the Mallrats is the part you were born to play: [Bruce Campbell] himself! In a world where Brodie’s biggest hero [Stan Lee] is gone (but never forgotten), he’s gonna need all his other heroes. And Brodie loooooves Evil Dead 2 & Ash!”

When previously talking about the sequel and what the story would entail, Smith said:

“It’s 20 years later and the mall is on the brink of shutting down. Just like the mall everywhere it’s kind of on the way out…So it takes place as the mall is about to close and Brody Bruce, the Jason Lee character, is throwing his… he’s got a comic book store, Body Bruce’s Secret Stash, which we had introduced in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He has moved it into the mall and he’s throwing this Mallathon Comic Con to try to keep the mall alive. He’s like the people in Back to the Future – ‘Save the clock tower’ – he’s trying to save the mall and shit… The whole place finally has a crowd in it for the first time in years and the movie is stolen from Die Hard so in the middle of the Comic Con terrorists take over the mall and so originally the title of the script was Mallrats 2: Die Hard in a Mall. I don’t think Fox is going to let us call it that so we might have to call it something else, but Brody teams up with everyone you remember and love from this movie, 18 characters from this movie come back in Mallrats 2 and then we add another generation as well, their kids as well.”

I loved Mallrats when it was first released, so I’m happy to see that Smith isn’t giving up on the sequel! Hopefully, he gets to make the movie this year!
