HELLRAISER Is Getting Rebooted with Writer and Producer David S. Goyer

The screenwriter behind several of Warner Bros. DC movies, David S. Goyer, is set to write and produce a feature film reboot of Clive Barker’s classic 1987 horror film Hellraiser for Spyglass Media Group.

Goyer is hit or miss for me on the films that he’s worked on, and I’m not really sure what to expect from him with this Hellraiser reboot. I know a lot of horror fans probably feel that this franchise doesn’t need a new reboot. What Clive Barker did with the first films is all I really need to see.

Barker did some crazy-ass shit with that franchise and those demonic creatures from hell. I just image that this reboot is going to be filled with a bunch of CGI monster and demonic nonsense.

Hellraiser spawned from Barker’s original novella The Hellbound and the Books of Blood. From there we have seen ten films made along with graphic novels and other merchandise. The story followed “the resurrection of Frank, who opens a door to another dimension and saw his body destroyed by the Cenobites, who are creatures from Hell that grant sadomasochistic pleasures to those who call upon them. The most notable of them is PinheadYears later, Frank’s brother Larry moves into their late mother’s abandoned house with new wife Julia. He has an accident, which triggers Frank’s resurrection, and soon enables the Cenobites to come forth again.”

Gary Barber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Spyglass said in a statement:

“Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative Hellraiser haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of Hellraiser.”

I’m not really convinced that Goyer is the “perfect storyteller” for this franchise, but he did say:

“I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”

What do you all think about Hellraiser getting rebooted by Goyer? Do you think he’ll pull it off and deliver a solid script and movie for the fans?

The Power of the Dog: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elisabeth Moss to Star in Adaptation

The Power of the Dog: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elisabeth Moss to star in adaptation

Variety is reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch (Avengers: Endgame, Brexit, Good Omens) and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, Us, Her Smell) will be starring in The Power of the Dog, the adaptation of the novel written by Thomas Savage.

Jane Campion (The Piano, Top of the Lake) wrote the screenplay and will direct the project. The book tells a story of wealthy Montana brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank. Phil is brilliant and cruel, while George is fastidious and gentle. Together, they are joint owners of the biggest ranch in their Montana valley. When George secretly marries local widow Rose (Moss), an angry Phil wages a relentless war to destroy her by using her son Peter as a pawn.

“The Power of the Dog is a sublime novel that deserves a life on the big screen. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story, it really haunted me. The themes of masculinity, nostalgia, and betrayal are an intoxicating mix,” Campion said. “It’s also rare to find a story where the themes, the plot and the characters build tension as they reveal each other and even the end is satisfying and unexpected. It will be the first time I’ve worked with a male lead, which is exciting. Phil is a charismatic and complex character who declares war on his brother’s new wife and her teenage son.”

The project comes from See-Saw Films and Big Shell Films/Max Films in association with Brightstar. Roger Frappier of Max Films, who originally had the rights to the novel, offered the property to Campion after the two meet at a recent Cannes Film Festival. Tanya Seghatchian of Brightstar will produce, with Emile Sherman and Iain Canning driving the financing and physical production.

BBC Films has also helped develop the production, with BBC Films’ rose Garnett, Simon Gillis of See-Saw and John Woodward of Brightstar serving as executive producers. The Power of the Dog will go into pre-production at the end of this year.

Let’s Talk About The New SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Trailer and I’ve Included a Bunch of Screenshots

lets-talk-about-the-new-spider-man-far-from-home-trailer-and-here-a-bunch-of-screenshots-social.jpg

A new trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home dropped today, and it was filled with all kinds of fun goodies! The biggest thing revealed in the trailer was that Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) is from a different Earth from an alternate universe. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) also says that the snap tore a hole in their dimension. I talk about what this could all mean here, and I’m not entirely convinced that it’s true. Remember that time when Marvel made us believe that The Mandarin was going to play a big role and be a big villain in Iron Man 3?

Anyway, if the MCU is going to actually play with the multiverse, I’m all for it! This means that things in the MCU are going to get even crazier from here on out! I hope that it turns out to be true, we’ll just have to wait and see how the story for Far Form Home plays out and if Mysterio is full of shit or not.

One thing we do know is that the world has changed, and Peter Parker is having a really hard time coping with the death of Tony Stark. While a lot of people think that this whole multiverse thing will be used as a way to bring back Robert Downey Jr. as Tony, I don’t think that will be the case at all. His death in Endgame needed to have a real impact on the MCU and I think Marvel is smart enough not to cheapen the sacrifice that he made.

Happy (Jon Favreau) tells Peter (Tom Holland) that Tony wouldn’t have done what he did if he didn’t know that Peter was going to be there when he was gone. I love that Happy is going to have a big role in this movie! I’ve really enjoyed this character, so to see him continue to help Spider-Man in this new film is a real treat for fans. I imagine he feels obligated and a sense of duty to do this after Tony died.

I also love the fact that at the beginning of the trailer, Peter is just trying to avoid Nick Fury because he wants to just go on vacation with his friends. He totally deserves a break, but as we lean in the trailer, Spider-Man is the only hero available to help him out with fighting against The Elementals, which we get a really good look at in the trailer! But Fury ends up getting his way and taking Peter away from his friends and MJ, who he is clearly trying to start a relationship with.

Speaking of MJ, judging from what we see in the trailer it looks like she has figured out that Peter is really Spider-Man. That will make for an interesting dynamic as the characters slowly form a relationship with each other.

One of the other aspects of the story that I like is that Mysterio seems to serve as a new mentor for Peter. A lot of fans think that the story is going to build up this great relationship and then completely tear it down when Peter finds out that Mysterio is a liar and that he’s the real person behind The Elemental attacks. I hope that’s not true, but the film could very well play out that way.

There’s also a line of dialogue where Peter says that “world needs the next Iron Man.” He seems to believe that Mysterio could be that person. But maybe the next Iron Man will be Peter Parker, especially with that proud look that we see Happy give Peter while playing with some Iron Man tech, after he says that line. That’s followed by Nick Fury asking Peter, “Are you going to step up or not?”

Clearly Spider-Man is going to step up! I loved what I saw in this new trailer, and I’m excited to see how this will lead into the future of the MCU.

Here are a bunch of screenshots from the trailer to scroll through. Check them out and let us know if you have any other thoughts on what this latest trailer revealed to us now that you’ve had a little bit of time to soak it in and watch the trailer a ton of times.

20th Century Fox TV signs Jon M. Chu to major first-look deal

Filmmaker Jon M. Chu has landed at 20th Century Fox TV. The Crazy Rich Asians director signed a major four-year, first-look deal with the television studio, according to Deadline. No details were disclosed, but it’s being reported to be somewhere in the mid-seven-figure range.

The agreement will have Chu developing, executive producing and perhaps even direct new projects and maybe get behind the camera once again.

Throughout my film career I have been lucky enough to play in many genres from dance and music to action, romantic-comedy, documentary, drama and beyond, so it was crucial for me, as a storyteller, to find a partner in the television space that had the same vast interests and willingness to break the mold with new perspectives and stories that represent the diverse world we live in,” Chu said in a statement.

This deal comes in addition to Chu’s multitude of other projects currently in development. This includes the Thai cave rescue story for Netflix, the Apple TV+ series Home Before Dark, an In the Heights movie, based on the Lin Manuel Miranda show, and a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, titled China Rich Girlfriend.
