POKEMON SHIELD and POKEMON SWORD Leak Talks About Starter Evolutions

We have another supposed leak for Pokemon Shield and Pokemon Sword. The last leak was about the release date as well as trailer and convention schedules, but this one is more about game content. As always, it’s important to take these rumors with a very large grain of salt, but if they turn out to be true, it could be really awesome.

The first part of the leak is about the evolutions of the starter Pokemon. Fans have been dying to know more about the starters and if this all pans out, many will be excited. Scorbunny’s final evolution is rumored to be a Fire/Electric dual-type (yay, it’s not Fire/Fighting!) that is a football (soccer) player. This makes a lot of sense actually as Scorbunny already has a bit of that aesthetic going on, and with the idea that rabbits are fast, Electric would be a decent secondary type. Meanwhile, Sobble “turns into a 16-17th century style actor.” I’m not really sure what this means, but his typing would be Water/Ghost. This is a pretty cool typing I could get behind, I am just having a hard time picturing it. Maybe he becomes the ghost of Williams Shakespeare? Finally, Grookey. He will reportedly become a musician that uses his stick to play instruments with a Grass/Rock typing. Once again, this is very possible. We all knew that Grookey’s stick would likely play into his evolution and with the strong ties between the UK (remember, Galar is based on the UK) and rock music, it would make sense.

The leak also says that the legendaries that will be on the boxes are wolves. This makes perfect sense considering the art for the titles already features wolf heads. Shield will presumably have a Steel/Rock wolf while Sword’s wolf is a Steel/Fighting. I’m not a fan of these typings as Sword’s legendary will have a clear advantage over Shield. In addition, Meltan and Melmetal are said to be “almost important” to the story and the post-game.

There will also be two evil teams in Shield and Sword, but they won’t be version specific like in Ruby and Sapphire. The first evil team is said to be styled after Roman gladiators with their goal simply being to rule Galar. However, they eventually team up with the player and the league in order to fight the second team. This second team is said to be comprised of scientists and inventors who are “obsessed with the idea of perfection and purity.” Their goal is to use the legendary Pokemon to brainwash the people of Galar for support until they are no longer needed.

Some other reports from the leak indicate that the title of Gym Master that fans are curious about is simply a mistranslation of the already known Gym Leader. Also, the Professor is said to not be important to the story as she studies the relationship between humanity and nature. Your rival is described as nice (whatever happened to jerk rivals you dreamed of murdering?) with dark secrets as their family are members of the evil scientists. Finally, fans can expect somewhere between 85-120 new Pokemon.

That’s a lot of information in this leak, and I have a feeling that there is some truth to it. I could totally see the Gym Masters thing being true and that range of possible new Pokemon is so big, I wouldn’t be surprised if the actual number was in that range. I am taking everything with a grain of salt though and hope the other leak was right about a new trailer on May 10 where we’ll hopefully learn a lot more.
