Disney Is Worried About Taika Waititi’s JOJO RABBIT Being Too Edgy For Their Brand

jojo rabbit.jpg

Disney has given Twentieth Century Fox their first review since acquiring the studio, and it didn’t go as well as either would have hoped. Since the merger, Fox has released four films, beginning with the faith-based film Breakthrough, which was the only one that turned a profit. X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Stuber, and The Art of Racing in the Rain were all sadly considered flops. Disney’s Chief Executive Bob Iger did not mince words during the company’s quarterly earnings call. Here’s what he had to say:

“The Fox studio performance … was well below where it had been and well below where we hoped it would be when we made the acquisition.”

Yikes! That had to have been rough to hear. But Disney execs have to take into account that some of the problem has to be chalked up to timing. Anything would have looked like small potatoes up against Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, and The Lion King. And there are definitely some fantastic acquisitions they now have in their back pocket. Disney is excited that Marvel will be able to get their hands on Fantastic Four and X-Men, to see these stories and characters be given some justice.

They are however a little nervous about some of the projects fitting the Disney brand. They are hoping to give Deadpool fans what they want while not venturing into too dark of territory. And speaking of dark territory, they are also nervous about the upcoming Jojo Rabbit, Fox Searchlight’s film about a young boy named Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) in Hitler’s army in Nazi Germany who becomes confused when he discovers his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic.

In the film, he must confront his views, and his imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, to figure out his path. I’m really excited about this movie, and I think fans are going to show up for it. It’s being made by Taika Waititi, who is also playing Hitler, and I believe it’s going to do well, having nothing to do with Disney. But, the studio doesn’t feel that it fits their brand. Variety says:

The scathing takedown of Nazism may, however, prove a little too edgy for Disney brass accustomed to producing movies suitable for parents and kids. Searchlight has started to screen the film for its new parent company. Halfway through one recent viewing one executive grew audibly uncomfortable, worrying aloud that the material would alienate Disney fans. His unease may have been over the film’s cutting-edge satire, but it was also an expression of the culture clash taking place as the two studios embark on their new union.

I think it’s just going to take some time to get used to the merge, and though it may not have happened at a perfect time, the benefits outweigh the problems, and there are lots of exciting prospects to come.

What do you think? What is exciting to you about the Disney/Fox combination?

We’ve got a new teaser trailer for you to check out for American Horror Story: 1984, and as you’ll see it was inspired by the iconic shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, only it takes place in the daylight at an outdoor shower stall at a summer camp.

It’ll be fun to see how this story ends up playing out, but I’m mostly interested in seeing what kind of weird and crazy twists and turns it’ll have.

Romance meets renovations in the Falling Inn Love trailer

It’s like a romantic comedy mixed with a little bit of an HGTV reality show about flipping houses. In the new Netflix film Falling Inn Love, a woman from the big city has her life crumbling down, only to win a small bed and breakfast in rural Auckland, New Zealand. You can check out the trailer along with some first-look photos below!

When Gabriela Diaz’s (Christina Milian) San Francisco design firm folds the week of her break-up, she’s inspired by a potent concoction of wine and Wi-Fi, she successfully enters a contest to “Win an Inn” overlooking New Zealand’s countryside. Thousands of airline miles later, she discovers The Bellbird Valley Farm boasts a crumbling facade, floorboard-treading goat, and meddling neighbor who covets the space.

Eager to renovate and sell the property fast, she partners with Jake Taylor (Adam Demos), the Kiwi contractor and volunteer firefighter observing much of her city-girl culture shock. Once the final fixtures are hung, she’s hesitant to leave him, the inn, and the inviting community that nurtured her creative side.

The film also stars Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Anna Jullienne, Claire Chitham, Blair Strang, Jonathan Martin, William Walker, Daniel Watterson, Simone Walker. Roger Kumble directs from a script by Elizabeth Hackett and Hilary Galanoy.

Dave Bautista to star and produce action thriller Traphouse

According to Deadline, Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has signed on for the leading role in Signature Film’s forthcoming action thriller Traphouse. Bautista will also produce along with his longtime manager Jonathan Meisner through their Dream Bros Entertainment banner.

“Traphouse is a project that we’ve been working on for years,” Bautista said. “We’re thrilled to be working with Marc and his team at Signature to bring it to life, and in Gary, we’ve found the perfect writer to infuse our original fast-paced action movie with tons of heart.”

Traphouse will follow the story of an undercover DEA agent and his partner as they embark on a game of cat and mouse against an audacious, and surprising group of thieves which turn out to be their own rebellious teenagers. Their smart kids uses their tactics and top-secret intel in order to rob from a dangerous cartel. The film’s script will be written by Fast & Furious creator Gary Scott Thompson.

Harry Styles Has Passed on Playing Prince Eric in Disney’s Upcoming Live-Action THE LITTLE MERMAID

harry styles.jpg

Actor and musician Harry Styles (Dunkirk) has officially turned down the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. It turns out that the initial reports of his being in talks for the part were premature, and he removed himself from the running amicably.

This is a huge bummer because Styles is dreamy, with fantastic hair and a great set of pipes. I think he would have been perfect. So we will just have to see who they scrounge up in his place. The studio has moved on to other prospects and is expected to announce a decision soon.

In the meantime, Halle Bailey (Grow-ish) is set to play our mermaid princess, Ariel; Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls, The Kitchen) will become Ursula the sea witch; Jacob Tremblay (Room) will voice Ariel’s fish friend, Flounder; and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell) will voice the goofy seagull, Scuttle. Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men, Skyfall) is still in talks for the role of King Triton.

I really hope that falls through though, because the dude is creepy. I don’t like him, and I don’t think he belongs in a Disney movie. His persona doesn’t scream dear old dad. It just screams.

So who would you like to see fill out the cast?

Dave Bautista Set to Star in a New Action Thriller Called TRAPHOUSE

Dave Bautista has jumped on board a new film project called Traphouse. The movie is an action thriller that is being written by Fast & Furious creator Gary Scott Thompson.

The story will follow an undercover DEA agent and his partner who “embark on a game of cat and mouse with an audacious, and surprising group of thieves — their own rebellious teenagers, who have begun robbing from a dangerous cartel, using their parents’ tactics and top-secret intel to do it.”

That sounds like it could be an entertaining movie. Bautista is also developing the project as a producer, and he said in a statement:

For the most part, I’ve enjoyed the films that Bautista has been involved with, and this sounds like it’ll be another fun film project for him to be a part of.
