The Star of Disney’s Live-Action MULAN Has Gotten Political, Putting the Movie’s Success at Risk

mulan action shot.jpg

Disney movies are pretty much a sure thing when it comes to success at the box office, and the live-action remakes we have been seeing a string of are no different. However, one upcoming film may be facing a bit of a roadblock. The star of the live-action Mulan film, Liu Yifei, has recently spoken out on her stance on the current protests, giving her support to the Hong Kong Police on social media.

This was a controversial stance because while the protests, which have been happening for the last four months, have been mostly peaceful, they have seen their share of action with confrontation between the people and the police.

So now people are sharing the hashtag #BoycottMulan, because they don’t appreciate her opinion. Mulan opens in theaters in seven months, so while that could have died down by then, and I don’t think it will have any impact on how the film does in the US, we will have to see what the state of the protests is by then.

I’ll never understand why people get so mad at actors who share their views. You don’t have to share their opinions. You don’t even have to see their movies, but they can say whatever they want. No one should be silenced. It’s very easy to ignore people you don’t even know. I do it all the time.

Mulan opens in theaters on March 27, 2020. Does this impact your excitement for the film?

Director Johannes Roberts teases Resident Evil reboot

When asked about the current progress of Constantin Films’ forthcoming Resident Evil reboot, 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts told Screen Rant that the project is still moving forward and is in active development. He also teased about the reboot’s new storyline, revealing that it will be much closer to its video game roots.

“We are in active development of that at the moment,” Roberts said. “I pitched them a take, and they really loved it. So, we are just gearing up on that as we speak, really. I’m in the office all the time there. So, yeah, it’s great. It’s gonna be super scary. It’s super, super scary. And it’s just getting back to the roots of the game. I think, at the moment, I’m not really allowed to say much more than that. But it’s gonna be a lot of fun.”

Last year, it was reported that Roberts had been tapped to helm and write the Resident Evil reboot. Though previously attached James Wan’s Atomic Monster has dropped out of the project.

POLL: The Best and Worst Movies of Summer 1989

POLL: The Best and Worst Movies of Summer 1989

POLL: The Best and Worst Movies of Summer 1989

Summer of 2019 has had a few huge movies (Avengers: Endgame obviously being one of them), but no one would claim it’s been an Earth-shattering summer for film. Back in 1989, however, all the forces of destiny seemed to have converged to form one of the biggest movie summers of all-time. ComingSoon.net wants to hear from its readers about which film they consider to be the best (and worst) of Summer 1989, so make your voice heard in the polls below!

So what made Summer 1989 so amazing? If you were too young to remember, it was a year when studios unleashed a wave of sequels to hugely popular, decade-defining films, and served as something of a template for the modern franchise-focused tentpoles that dominate the months of April through August. New installments of Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, Lethal Weapon, Star Trek and 007 helped feed the appetite of audiences that wanted more of these iconic heroes.

But this was also a moment in time when original, non-IP films had a chance to make a big splash. It’s hard to imagine a low-key romantic comedy like When Harry Met Sally… raking in nearly $100 million ($200 million in 2019 dollars) today. A film like that might even go Direct to VOD. More human comedy/dramas like Parenthood, Dead Poets Society and Uncle Buck all did great business as well. It was also a huge summer for powerful filmmaking voices like Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing) and Steven Soderbergh (Sex, Lies, and Videotape) to emerge as the independent film movement took hold.

The big draw that summer, though, was Batman. It’s hard to imagine if you weren’t there at the time, but Tim Burton’s superhero blockbuster was a true cultural phenomenon, with lines wrapping around theaters to see Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight battle Jack Nicholson’s Joker in a gothic dystopian Gotham City. The film changed the way tentpoles were marketed, and ushered in the era of the modern, grittier superhero movie.

Of course, in any classic era for films there are always a lot of duds as well. New entries in the Friday the 13th, Fright Night and Karate Kid series all died at the box office. You also have oddities like the sci-fi comedy musical Earth Girls Are Easy or the campy Nicolas Cage cult film Vampire’s Kiss. Even vehicles for big stars like Sly Stallone (Lock Up), Clint Eastwood (Pink Cadillac) and the re-teaming of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor (See No Evil, Hear No Evil) didn’t really work.

Never Before Seen Deleted Scene From Super Mario Bros. Movie

original.jpg

I know this may sound weird, but the Super Mario Bros. movie plays a major role in my movie watching life. In 1992, before the movie was released, I was given a VHS screener of the movie starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper, by a neighbor who happened to be one of the sound engineers for the movie. I was the coolest guy at school for awhile because all of my friends got to see the movie before it came out. Granted, it is not one of the greatest movies of all time but as a 13 year old kid it was one of the most awesome things that had happened to me up until that point.

It didn’t take long for me to figure out that the movie was not that great, but it always held a special place in my heart because of the street cred it gave me.

Now let’s talk about 2019 and a little website called Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive and this little gem they found on eBay:

We’re incredibly excited to announce just in time for the 26th anniversary the discovery of a VHS tape containing cut footage from Super Mario Bros. The tape surfaced in an eBay lot alongside materials owned by the film’s primary producer Roland Joffé.

We will be digitizing the tape with the intention of restoring the footage for our forthcoming Region 1 Blu-Ray release. Stay tuned for updates!

They found this tape in May of this year and they have just released one of the deleted scenes videos on YouTube. Check it out!

I can’t wait to see what these boys do with the footage that they have found. Let us know what you think.

Deadline reports that Arrow‘s Stephen Amell is climbing to the top rope from network TV to premium cable. The actor will star in the upcoming series Heels for Starz, an “hourlong drama set in the outrageous world of independent professional wrestling.”

The series has been picked up for eight episodes with Mike O’Malley (Survivor’s Remorse) to serve as showrunner. The full description for the series reads:

“Heels is about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals — one of them played by Amell — war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel (Amell). But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.”

Amell will play the role of Jack Spade, the hard-working owner of the wrestling organization, a husband and father trying to make ends meet while fighting to realize his impossible dreams. He has the mind of an artist in the body of a warrior, and a Steve Jobs-ian need for perfection and control.

Though he became a household name for playing Oliver Queen on The CW’s Arrow, Amell did appear in the actual wrestling ring, throwing down in the WWE’s SummerSlam in 2015 and going up against Arrow guest star Cody Rhodes aka Stardust.

To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image. Full of dark comedy and sly satire, Ryan Murphy’s The Politician offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician.
