Bassam Tariq Is Marvel’s Lead Choice to Direct MCU Blade Movie

Marvel Studios has found its director for its upcoming Blade movie, tapping Bassam Tariq to helm the picture, according to a recent report from Deadline.

Tariq, perhaps best known for his work on the film Mogul Mowgli, is officially in talks to direct the upcoming adaptation of the popular Marvel comic book. Stacy Osei-Kuffour is on board to write the script for the film starring the vampire hunter, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige attached as producer, as per usual.

The search for a director for the highly anticipated film has been underway for months, with the search seeming to be an exhaustive one. According to the report, however, Tariq seems to be the final choice, and while a deal is not done just yet, it does seem like Marvel has zeroed in on Tariq to take charge of the film.

The Blade movie was first announced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, with Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali making a surprise appearance at the panel. Ali, who previously starred in Netflix’s Luke Cage, confirmed that he was the one who first approached the studio about wanting to take on the titular heroic vampire. The daywalker was first famously portrayed by Wesley Snipes, who has already voiced out his support to Ali following the announcement.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Stacy Osei-Kuffour has been tapped to pen the screenplay after six months of meeting with various writers, making her the first Black female writer to pen a Marvel movie. It’s still unclear which phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will the upcoming film be debuting in because it currently has no release date attached to it yet.

The Blade Trilogy from New Line Cinema helped shepherd comic books and superheroes to the big screen.  Combined, the three films brought in over $400 million at the global box office. Blade was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan as a supporting character in the comic book “The Tomb of Dracula” #10 in July 1973.

Marvel’s BLADE Movie Lands a Director with Bassam Tariq

Marvel Studios’ upcoming vampire movie Blade has taken a big step forward with the hiring of a director. The filmmaker that has been hired for the job is Bassam Tariq, who best known for directing the Riz Ahmed film Mogul Mowgli.

Mahershala Ali is set to play the vampire hunter and the script for the film is being written by Stacy Osei-Kuffour (Watchmen). Obviously, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is producing.

Blade is a human-vampire hybrid thanks to his mother being bitten and killed by a blood-sucker during childbirth. The character was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan, and he made his first appearance in the comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10 in July of 1973.

We don’t have any details to share regarding the film, but vampires are a part of the MCU, and vampires were mentioned in the season finale of Loki.

I’m not familiar with any of Tariq’s work, but Marvel hired him for a reason. He must’ve had a great pitch for the movie. Blade is such a great Marvel character and I hope that Tariq and the Marvel creative team give fans a great movie.

Ben Whishaw Has a Breakdown and Goes on a Reckless Journey in Trailer for SURGE

FilmRise has released a trailer for an upcoming thriller titled Surge. It stars Ben Whishaw (Paddington, James Bond) as a man named Joseph who goes on a bold and reckless journey of self-liberation after he has a mental break.

The story is set over 24 hours in London, and Joseph is “trapped in a soulless job, living a life devoid of emotion and meaning. After an impulsive act of rebellion, Joseph unleashes a wilder version of himself. He is propelled on a reckless journey through London, ultimately experiencing what it feels like to be alive.”

As you’ll see in the trailer after Joseph snaps he spirals out of control and embarks on a crime-filled journey as he robs a bank, steals a motorcycle, and goes on the run. This looks like a fast-paced flick!

Surge is directed by Aneil Karia, who also wrote the film with Rupert Jones and Rita Kalnejais. The film also stars Ian Gelder, Jasmine Jobson, and Muna Otaru.

Surge is slated to hit theaters and VOD on September 24th.
