Showrunner Damon Lindelof also opened up about the group of white supremacists who will be a focal point of the series, and how race will be handled.

“We talked a lot about racism. We asked what’s the thing that’s causing a tremendous amount of anxiety in America today? The only authentic answer was race.”

As for why the racist group in the series are wearing Rorschach masks, Lindelof explains he wanted to explore Rorschach’s alt-right views:

“I don’t wanna editorialise on whether or not Rorschach was a white supremacist. I don’t think he was, but he certainly had what would now be considered some alt-right views. We wanted to explore that.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how the creative team actually handles this aspect of the story. What do you think about how they are going to handle Rorschach’s legacy in the series?

The series is a continuation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and the story set years after the events in the original story in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws. It embraces the nostalgia of the original graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.

The cast includes Regina King, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.

Watchmen premieres on HBO October 20th. Check out the latest trailer for the series again below.
