Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Conchords) has joined the cast of James Cameron’s Avatar sequels. He will be taking on the role of a marine biologist named Dr. Ian Garvin. Cameron had this to say about the casting in a statement:

“I’ve loved Jemaine’s work for years and I’m really pumped that he’s joining our cast as Ian Garvin, one of my favorite characters.”

I’m a fan of Clement and his work. He’s a very funny guy and I imagine he will be bringing some comic relief to these Avatar movies.

The first of the Avatar sequels is set to be released on December 17th, 2021, which is a year after what Fox had planned before it was bought by Disney. The other three Avatar sequels will be released in December of 2023, December of 2025, and finally December of 2027, when we are eight freakin’ years older than we are now.

Clement joins the previously cast Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver, who are returning to reprise their roles. They will also be joined by Michelle Yeoh, Kate Winslet and Game of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin.

While we don’t have any plot details on the sequels, we know that Avatar 2 is set several years after Avatar. “At the center of each of our four movies will be the Sully family. Each sequel will play as a standalone movie. Each movie’s story will come to its own conclusion… However, when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world.”

What do you think about Jemaine Clement joining the Avatar franchise?
