DC’s Blue Beetle Movie is Tracking For a $30 Million Opening Weekend, Which is Low For a Superhero Movie

It looks like DC Studios isn’t expecting a bit hit at the box office with its upcoming Blue Beetle movie. According to Deadline, the film is tracking a $30 million opening weekend at the box office and that’s definitely a low and disappointing start for a new superhero movie.

This would make Blue Beetle DC’s lowest-performing title at the box office during an opening weekend this year. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which was released earlier in the year only made $30.5 million during its opening weekend, while The Flash pulled in $55 million. Remember though, The Suicide Squad had a worse opening weekend with only $26 million.

I don’t think this is a surprise to anyone, but what would be a pleasant surprise is if the movie actually did have a better opening weekend! Only time will tell, though. This could go either way. It’s hard to tell, but Blue Beetle isn’t really that popular of a superhero, so we’ll see. Regardless, I think the movie will deliver some fun entertainment for families.

The film’s director, Angel Manuel Soto, really hopes this first film is a hit because he already has an entire trilogy planned out!

In the film, “Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.”

Blue Beetle was directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The movie stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Reyes; Bruna Marquezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister, Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillén; and Susan Sarandon as the villain, Victoria Kord.

The movie is set to be released only in theaters on August 18, 2023.

Blue Beetle is the alter ego of Jaime Reyes, who’s played by Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña. When Jaime returns to his hometown after graduating from college, he’s chosen to be the symbiote host to the Scarab, an alien being that grants him superpowers and exoskeleton armor, turning him into the Blue Beetle.

DC Studios CEO James Gunn recently confirmed that Blue Beetle will be the first official character in his new DCU – but it’s not the first movie. That title belongs to Superman: Legacy, which is set to release in 2025. However, the first DCU project is Creature Commandos, a Max TV show coming in 2024. Still with us…?
