Almost a year ago, it was revealed that a new Game of Thrones spinoff series was going into development that would focus on Jon Snow, and Kit Harrington is set to reprise his role.
While speaking with Deadline, Francesca Orsi, the HBO Head of Drama, offered an update on the project saying that it’s still in the “very early stages” of development and has not received an official greenlight yet.
Orsi added: “We’re just working deeply with the writers to get it in shape for potential greenlight, but at this point, no, no determination on whether it can go all the way.”
In the final season of Game of Thrones, Snow discovered his true identity as Aegon Targaryen, and he could be an heir to the Iron Throne. At the end of the series he was exiled from Westeros, and he traveled into the Haunted Forest, North of the Wall, with Ghost and the Wildlings to start a new life.
The series is set to follow Snow’s adventures north of the Wall with the Wildlings. Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin previously confirmed that Harington came up with the idea for a spinoff and brought it to Martin and HBO. Martin shared:
“Yes, it was Kit Harington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/ showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet. But Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific… I am involved, just as I am with The Hedge Knight and The Sea Snake and Ten Thousand Ships, and all the animated shows. Kit’s team have visited me here in Santa Fe and worked with me and my own team of brilliant, talented writer/ consultants to hammer out the show.”
In another interview, Harington’s former Game of Thrones co-star, Emilia Clarke, confirmed the news as well, saying, “He has told me about it, and I know it exists. It’s happening. It’s been created by Kit as far as I can understand, so he’s in it from the ground up. So what you will be watching, hopefully, if it happens, is certified by Kit Harrington.”
