Mel Gibson Reveals Sean Connery Is Part of the Reason He Turned Down the Role of James Bond

Here’s an interesting “what if” scenario regarding the James Bond franchise. Mel Gibson was offered the role of 007 about 40 years ago, but he ultimately turned down the opportunity. In a recent interview JoBlo, the filmmaker opened up about this experience and reveals that part of the reason why he didn’t want to do it was because of Sean Connery:

“I got offered the James Bond movies when I was like twenty-six, which is like forty years ago, okay? And they said, hey, we want you to be the next James Bond. And I thought about it; I was in Australia, I was working with Peter Weir. And I did think about it, and I sort of turned it down – for that reason. Because I thought, look what happened to poor Sean [Connery], he got stuck there for like three decades.

It’s not that hard to imagine a young Mel Gibson in the role of James Bond. He would have actually been a very interesting choice and I think he would’ve been great! But, in the end, the guy has had an incredible career in the movie business and has been a part of a ton of great films.

He definitely doesn’t seem to regret turning down James Bond. Would are your thoughts on Mel Gibson in the role of James Bond? Yea or nay?
