Martin Scorsese Praises Director Ti West and His New Horror Film PEARL

I haven’t had a chance to see director Ti West’s new horror film Pearl yet, but I’ve been hearing good things about it, and I’ll get around to watching it soon. Pearl is a prequel to West’s horror film X, which was released earlier this year.

Mia Goth stars in the film as Pearl, a young woman in 1918 with high hopes of leaving her small town and becoming a big star. As her dream seems to crumble, she becomes increasingly unstable and seems to go on a killing spree with a pitchfork and an ax.

Legendary director Martin Scorsese recently saw the film and in a statement, he shared with A24, he praises the film and its director saying:

“Ti West’s movies have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, powered by a pure, undiluted love for cinema. You feel it in every frame. A prequel to ‘X’ made in a diametrically opposite cinematic register (think 50s Scope color melodramas), ‘Pearl’ makes for a wild, mesmerizing, deeply — and I mean deeply — disturbing 102 minutes. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth really know how to toy with their audience … before they plunge the knife into our chests and start twisting. I was enthralled, then disturbed, then so unsettled that I had trouble getting to sleep. But I couldn’t stop watching.”

That’s some high praise indeed! I was already looking forward to watching this movie, but reading that statement for Scorsese definitely got me more excited about it. I’m looking forward to being disturbed!
