TOMB RAIDER Rights Up For Grabs After MGM Loses Them, Alicia Vikander No Longer Involved

MGM has lost the rights to the popular Tomb Raider video game franchise and they are now up for grabs to any studio that wants them. According to a report from The Wrap, the studio didn’t officially greenlight a sequel to the film in time and the rights lapsed. Now there’s a bidding war with multiple other studios trying to get their hands on the property. Unfortunately, Alicia Vikander will not be involved.

I thought she was great in the role of Lara Croft and I was looking forward to seeing her reprise the role in the sequel. That sequel had been in development since 2019, and it was being developed by Lovecraft Country and Black Canary writer and director Misha Green. The studio just didn’t move on it in time.

When previously talking about what the holdup was, Vikander said: “With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it’s kind of politics. I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.”

She also teased Green’s vision for the sequel saying: “I’ve been excited to show the world. I love what she’s done with Lovecraft Country.” Now, she won’t be able to show anyone. Now it looks like we’re eventually just going to get another reboot, another Lara Croft origin story.
