Tom Cruise Explains That He Rallied Hard To Get Val Kilmer Into TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer will reunite for the first time since the original Top Gun movie in Top Gun: Maverick. Having already seen the movie, I know how this all plays out, and all I’ll say is that it’s a wonderful and moving scene.

According to Cruise, he had to push the producers to make sure that Kilmer appeared in the film, and while he doesn’t have a huge role, his role in the story is at the heart of the movie. During a recent interview with People, Cruise said:

“I really rallied hard for him to make the movie. The kind of talent that he has, and you see that scene, it’s very special, it’s just very special.”

Early on in the production, producers had not reached out to Kilmer, but Kilmer was determined to be a part of it, so he and Cruise were on the same page in trying to make it happen. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously shared:

“[Cruise] said, ‘We have to have Val, we have to have him back. We have to have him in the film.’ And he was the driving force. We all wanted him, but Tom was really adamant that if he’s going to make another Top Gun, Val had to be in it.”

Bruckheimer agreed, saying, “[Kilmer is] such a fine actor, and he’s such a good individual. We had such a good time on the first one and wanted to bring some of the gang back together again.”

It was awesome to see Kilmer in the movie and I think the fans are going to appreciate what his character Iceman brings to the story. Top Gun: Maverick is one of the best and most entertaining films of the year and you’re all gonna love it!

Top Gun: Maverick also stars Miles Teller as Goose’s son; Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, and Lewis Pullman. Here’s the synopsis:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

The movie will be released on May 27th, 2022.
