Trailer For The Documentary Film GIRLS CAN’T SURF Tells The Story of Women’s Surfing in The 80s

Gravitas Ventures has released a trailer for a new surfing documentary film titled Girls Can’t Surf. The doc covers what it was like for the young women in the 80s who were trying to be recognized as surfers and the poor treatment they received in the process.

The movie was directed by Christopher Nelius and the synopsis for the film reads:

It’s the 1980s and the world of professional surfing is a circus of fluoro colours, peroxide hair and radical male egos. GIRLS CAN’T SURF follows the journey of a band of renegade surfers who took on the male-dominated professional surfing world to achieve equality and change the sport forever.

It’s pretty insane to me that these young women were treated like this. I’ve always felt surfing was a sport that was inclusive for everyone, and that is was a sport with a history of bringing people together. It’s sad to see that women were treated so poorly during this time as they were looking to be included and recognized in a sport that they loved.
