James Gunn Says the Music in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Will Be Totally Different From the First Two Films

The Guardians of the Galaxy movies are known just as well for their music as they are for being solid and great films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We are coming up on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and while we don’t know what music will be included in the film yet, the director, James Gunn, has spoken out about the differences between the music in the first two films versus this one, and what song we will definitely not hear in the movie.

At the end of Vol. 2, franchise character Kraglin, played by the director’s brother Sean Gunn, gifted Star-Lord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) a Zune that was purchased by the late character Yondu (Michael Rooker). In the first two films, the soundtrack is provided by Star-Lord’s “awesome” mixtapes made for him by his mother. Now, Star-Lord has a new device “with three hundred songs,” and there’s a huge range of opportunities for the music of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. James Gunn recently spoke with Billboard and teased the little he could say about the new music:

“Just that it comes from the brown Zune that Yondu gave to Peter Quill. They aren’t chosen by his mother, I can tell you that.”

While answering some fan questions on Instagram last year, Gunn told fans one song he definitely won’t be using, when asked, “Song or musical artist/genre you do NOT want in your movies that people (anyone) keep requesting.” He responded, “A thousand people have told me they want ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ in a Guardians movie and it seems hackneyed to me so it’s not gonna happen.”

Gunn also spoke to CinemaBlend about why some of the Guardians of the Galaxy songs are not in the same order on the soundtrack as the movie. Some Marvel fans picked up on this during the first two releases and wanted an explanation. Gunn explained:

“I think [it’s] because the order they are in in the movie is different than the order that they work well. As somebody who has put mixtapes together their whole life, the order of the songs in the movie doesn’t exactly work in the same way. So that’s why. When you’re putting songs together, there’s a flow to the way that the songs work together. And if you put them in the order in the movie, in winds up being too pop-y up front, and too dark on the back half. It gets a little darker as it goes on, especially Vol. 2.

Gunn has done a good job of picking epic soundtracks that were as intrinsic to the plot as any part of the story, so I feel like we are in good hands. But if you had it your way, what song(s) would you like to see the cast rock out to?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
