Weta Will Reportedly Handle the VFX Work in Noah Hawley’s ALIEN Series

I’m pretty excited about the new Alien series that Noah Hawley is currently developing for FX. It was recently revealed that some of the themes of the series would involve competing corporations and consciousness transference. When previouysly talking about it, Hawley said:

“It’s about how we’re trapped between the primordial past and the artificial intelligence of our future, where both [are] trying to kill us. It’s set on Earth of the future. At this moment, I describe that as Edison versus Westinghouse versus Tesla. Someone’s going to monopolize electricity. We just don’t know which one it is.”

Some new information has surfaced regarding the film’s development, and that news is that “Weta will be responsible for designing and bringing the Xenomorphs to life” in the series. The report comes from AVPGalaxy who says:

Though we can safely reveal that Weta is currently involved in the series’ production, we can’t say what the blend of practical and digital effects will be for the Aliens when the series moves into production in March. Weta is actually comprised of sister companies Weta Digital, which handles primarily computer generated effects, and Weta Workshop handling primarily practical effects & concept art.

I imagine the series will include a good blend of practical and CG VFX work as that’s what most productions are doing these days.

The story is set “not too far into our future, it’s the first Alien set on Earth—and by blending both the timeless horror of the first Alien film with the non-stop action of the second, it’s going to be a scary thrill ride that will blow people back in their seats.“

When previously talking about the series Hawley said, “It’s a story that’s set on Earth also. The alien stories are always trapped… Trapped in a prison, trapped in a space ship. I thought it would be interesting to open it up a little bit so that the stakes of ‘What happens if you can’t contain it?’ are more immediate.”

The series will most likely premiere sometime in 2023 on FX.
