In June, VIZ Media released RWBY: The Official Manga Volume 3. This is the final volume in the series with art and story by Bunta Kinami based on the hit Rooster Teeth series by Monty Oum. The manga is mostly an adaptation of the series, but there are a few changes made and fans can grab their copies in physical and digital forms from VIZ, comiXology (affiliate link), Barnes & Noble, and more. VIZ was kind enough to provide me with a copy to read and I wanted to share my thoughts below.
Roman Torchwick’s plans have been laid bare, and now it’s up to Team RWBY to save the day! This is everything they’ve been training for at Beacon Academy. Ruby is ready to protect the people of Remnant from Torchwick’s machinations, and Weiss, Blake and Yang are right by her side. The final volume is here, and Torchwick doesn’t stand a chance!
As I already mentioned, for the most part, everything in this manga is seen in the show. It does get drawn in Kinami’s really cool style though. There are some differences though. For one, we get to read about Sun and Neptune having more of a conversation about Blake before the dance and how Sun’s not sure he made a great impression on Blake. Zwei is also brought in with less ceremony than in the show. There’s also a change in how the girls are assigned to their mission and with how the mission goes with Dr. Oobleck. All that being said though, the changes either add an interesting insight or don’t really impact the story at all.
This volume of the manga ends at the end of Season 2 when Torchwick’s runaway train leads a ton of Grimm to Vale and all the students save the day. I really like Kinami’s style and it’s sad that the manga series is ending here. That being said, this is probably the best spot to end it if they weren’t going to go all the way. If you enjoy RWBY and want to see it presented in a cool art style, this manga’s a great option.
