I was lucky enough to be given an advanced copy of A Spider-Man Novel: Miles Morales Shock Waves to review. I am a huge fan of the graphic novel medium, so I felt super honored to get a sneak peek at the beginning of what could potentially be an awesome story.

Shock Waves was written by Justin A. Reynolds and illustrated by Pablo Leon. The story follows Miles shortly after finding out what his powers are. It shows the struggles of learning how to perfect the use of his powers and how to juggle his super hero life with normal life as a high-schooler.

When on the brink of him finding that balance, the Earth decides to shake it up a bit. After nearly capturing a pair thieves, a devastating earthquake rocks the island of Puerto Rico. Miles has a lot on his plate with helping his mother organize a fund raiser for all that was lost in the earthquake, trying to bring down the elusive thieves, meeting a new friend, and finding out the origins of a mysterious rock. Miles hopes that with the help of his roommate/techie Ganke, and mentor Peter Parker, he will be able to find out how all of these pieces fit together and stop what dangers lurk in the least expected places.

This juvenile fiction novel is great for readers getting into the graphic novel world. It has action, heart and a story that keeps readers waiting for more. The animation is fun without taking away from the gravity of the story. Miles goes through the struggles of what every teenager lives with. Add to it trying to save not only New York, but the whole world and you have Miles Morales’ life.

I really enjoyed that this story taught a lot of good lessons. The value of family, friends and believing in yourself. There are sweet Easter eggs that include Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl and a nod to the Eternals to help introduce young readers into the larger Marvel Universe.

This is a fun story for youth and adults alike. I highly recommend this graphic novel to anyone who loves to read. I am proud to have been trusted with the pre-release of this book and I cannot wait to see what comes next with this story.

A Spider-Man Graphic Novel: Miles Morales Shock Waves hits shelves on June 1st. You can pick up your copy in stores and online.
