Reese Witherspoon’s Sci-Fi Film PYROS Has Been Picked Up by Netflix

We recently reported that Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde, Big Little Lies) is set to star in and produce an upcoming sci-fi film called Pyros. She will be joined in production by Simon Kinberg (Deadpool, Logan, Legion). The film is based on the short story “Tardy Man” by Thomas Pierce, which was previously printed in The New Yorker. Thomas will be writing the film adaptation as well.

Now we know that the film has landed with Netflix, who won the rights in a bidding war. Here’s a synopsis for the story:

Tardy Man deals with a group of augmented people who are fitted with indestructible fire suits that are fused to their spines. They work for a corporation that recovers objects for wealthy people when their houses are burning. It is strictly forbidden for them to veer from their salvage missions, even when other humans are in danger. The protagonist decides to make an exception to this rule and that is the jumping off point.

This sounds like a super interesting story, and I’m generally happy for things to be picked up by Netflix, because I already have that service, so it’s not another thing I have to sign up for. But I am a little miffed at the recent cancellations at the streamer, so that has strained our relationship. At least this is a movie, and not a series, so they can’t cancel it out from under us.
