Well, we’ve officially left the Disney era of Power Rangers and have entered the Neo-Saban era. There are only 4 theme songs in this grouping since each series lasted for two seasons, so shall we just get started?
Power Rangers (Super) Samurai
Hey, this sounds cool. Wait, did they just rip off the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme? When you boil this theme song down, it sounds like the kind of cover that someone on YouTube would do of the MMPR theme. Then, they threw the word “samurai” in there a couple of times. Also, I don’t know if this counts as part of the theme, but I’m not a fan of having the cast announce their names. I don’t know why, but I just don’t care for it. This theme song definitely suffers from being a minute as well. It doesn’t need the extra 20-30 seconds to basically just repeat itself. Overall, this is a cool, albeit repetitive, copy of a classic.
Power Rangers (Super) Megaforce
This sounds familiar…too familiar…It turns out that Saban hit copy and paste on the Samurai theme, changed “samurai” to “Megaforce” and pretty much called it a day. How creative. Now, everything I said is technically, true, but I do have to give them credit, they edited this version to feel much better as a minute-long theme. There’s the finger-tapping solo added which then serves as a much better transition into the repeat of the song.
Power Rangers Dino (Super) Charge
What!? Something original? Are we back in the Disney era? This theme song is actually really cool. I like the deeper, more chant-like opening that then leads into this pop song that goes into a more 2010’s pop version of the classic Power Rangers theme. The lyrics are actually incredible for setting the scene and hyping the Rangers, reminiscent of themes like Dino Thunder, and I’m here for it. That being said, I like it. It definitely gets major points over the last two in originality though.
Power Rangers (Super) Ninja Steel
This song feels a bit more like Lost Galaxy and those Saban era themes. It feels a bit more like rock and has lyrics that touch on hyping the Rangers. I actually really like the underlying guitar riff. The song is okay, but there are some moments that don’t feel like great transitions, and the ending feels about 5-10 seconds too long. It’s decent, but I wish the guitar track wasn’t so faint.
The Neo-Saban era starts off pretty rough in my opinion, but it does get better. What theme is your favorite of this era?
