Director Robert Zemeckis has cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Walk) and Cynthia Erivo (The Outsider, Harriet) in Disney’s upcoming live-action/CGI remake of Pinocchio. Gordon-Levitt will take on the role of Jiminy Cricket and Erivo will play Blue Fairy. I love that Gordon-Levitt will be bringing Jiminy Cricket to life!
The two actors will join Tom Hanks who is playing Geppetto and Luke Evans who is set to play the coachman. In addition, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Flora and Ulysses) will provide the voice of Pinocchio, with Keegan-Michael Key as the voice of Honest John and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a new character that has been created for the film.
The story will follow the original animated Disney film, telling the classic tale of Geppetto, a woodworker who creates a marionette puppet boy named Pinocchio, wishing he had a son of his own. Pinocchio magically comes to life, and with the help of his conscience, in the form of Jiminy Cricket, he goes on a quest to become a real boy, facing obstacles along the way.
Zemeckis is directing the film off a script he wrote with Chris Weitz and the film is set to start shooting this month in the UK.
