The Deeper Meaning Behind Black Widow Coming After Hawkeye in AVENGERS: ENDGAME

On the feature commentary track for Avengers: Endgame, directors Joe and Anthony Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely offer some insight on certain aspects of the film. One of the more interesting things they discussed was why Black Widow was the only one who could’ve pulled Hawkeye/Ronin out of the dark and disturbed place he was.

There was a deeper meaning behind this scene as it brings the story arc for these characters full circle. Joe says:

“There’s no one who could have pulled him out of this other than her. No one else shows up and gets him to come home. “

Markus adds:

“Well it’s also… It’s implied that this is essentially what he did for her when he pulled her out of being a Russian Agent.”

Joe concludes:

“That’s right it comes full circle, their relationship. Right? ‘Cause he had an opportunity to kill her and he changed her life, and now here she is – changing his.”

I like that. The history of Black Widow and Hawkeye is a complicated one that I’ve wanted to see explored more in depth. I hope that this history ends up being explored a bit more in the upcoming Black Widow solo film.

What are your thoughts on this little bit of insight on Black Widow’s retrieval of Hawkeye?
