The Title for AVENGERS: ENDGAME Was Originally INFINITY GAUNTLET and The Directors Joked About Splitting It Into 2 Movies

When the final two Avengers film in The Infinity Saga were announced, they were called Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. After directors Anthony and Joe Russo came on board to direct the film Avengers 3 was quickly titled Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 ultimately became Avengers: Endgame. but that always wasn’t the title.

During a recent interview on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Joe Russo confirmed that the original title for the fourth film was supposed to be Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet. This was said to be the title for “quite a long time.” Back in 2017 Zoe Saldana actually accidentally revealed the title Infinity Gauntlet.

Since the film’s plot did revolve around Tony Stark creating a new gauntlet for the Infinity Stones to undo what Thanos did in Infinity War, the title Infinity Gauntlet is fitting. But I like Avengers: Endgame better. That is the best title that fits what all of this was leading up to, especially with Doctor Strange’s line, “We’re in the endgame now.” It made a lot more sense to change it.

They also talked about how they jokingly considered splitting Endgame up into two films. They explained:

“We used to joke about [splitting the movies in two] all the time because Alan Horn at Disney had overseen Lord of the Rings and he used to joke about it. Like, three hour movie, just cut it in half. I don’t know that it would have achieved this kind of success had we split it up.”

I’m glad they didn’t split it up! They easily could have, but I wouldn’t have wanted to wait another few months to be able to see how the rest of the story played out!
