James Gunn Shares One Classic Film That Was a Big Inspiration To THE SUICIDE SQUAD

James Gunn recently shared on social media one of the classic films that was a big inspiration to his upcoming DC movie The Suicide Squad. That film is 1967’s The Dirty Dozen.

The movie stars Lee Marvin as Major Reisman who is assigned to train a team of soldiers to parachute across enemy lines and assassinate German personnel at a French chateau during D-Day. The soldiers are recruited from murderers, rapists and criminals who are on death row, are promised commuted sentences. In spite of their history, the 12 men prove a spirited and courageous unit.

It not hard to see why that film was an inspiration to Gunn. It was also previously explained that The Suicide Squad will be like a gritty 1970’s style war action movie. The poster for The Suicide Squad that was released during DC FanDome also has the same tone and energy as the poster Gunn shared for The Dirty Dozen.

If you’ve never seen The Dirty Dozen, you should watch it! It’s a great movie!

Gunn also previously said that “The Suicide Squad is by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a movie” and he was looking to bring to life “great DC villains,” in the film whether they were are part of Task Force X in the comics or not.

The roster of characters includes Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as King Shark, and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, Nathan Fillion is T.D.K., Mayling Ng as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Steve Agee as King Shark, John Cena as Peacemaker, Joaquín Cosío as Mayor General Mateo Suarez, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Storm Reid as Bloodsport’s daughter, Tyla, and more. Taika Waititi will also be in the film, but his character is not included in this video.

As we’ve seen in the behind-the-scenes video, The Suicide Squad looks like a badass flick! The movie lands in theaters in 2021.
