Jason Momoa Says His DUNE Character, Duncan Idaho, is the Film’s Han Solo

This past week we got our first look at Denis Villeneuve‘s planned two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. For the most part, fans seem to be loving what they are seeing. I think it looks fantastic and I imagine we’ll be getting a teaser trailer in the near future.

Jason Momoa, who plays Duncan Idaho in the film, recently appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show. While he was on, he discussed his character a bit and compared him to the iconic Star Wars character, Han Solo:

“I get to play this character Duncan Idaho, who’s kind of a master swordsman who’s made the right hand man to Duke Leto who is Oscar Isaac. He’s the first person to be sent out to land on Dune and that’s when I meet the character that Javier Bardem plays.

“I can’t believe I had a scene with Javier Bardem! It’s a pretty massive film and I get to be this little—he’s kind of the Han Solo-esque of the group. He’s this rogue warrior who protects Timothée Chalamet and serves Oscar Isaac.”

This seems like a very different role for Momoa to take on but I’m sure he’ll be great. Here’s the synopsis for the film:

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

The film’s incredible cast also includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as his mother Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Harkonnen, Zendaya as Chani., Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, David Dastmcalchian as Piter De Vries, Chang Chen as Dr. Yueh, and Dave Bautista as the Baron’s nephew Rabban.

Dune will be released on November 20th, 2020.
