Michael Bay has closed a multiyear first look deal with Sony Pictures for his Bay Films, and he will produce both film and TV projects for the studio. The deal brings Bay back to his roots as it’s the studio where he made his directorial debut with 1995’s Bad Boys.

Since then he’s certainly honed his craft on the art of blowing things up and directing action sequences. I enjoy a lot of Bay’s films, and I’m looking forward to his future projects with Sony. I’m just happy that he’s not making Transformers movies anymore. Those just kept getting worse and worse.

As he does move forward, I hope he surrounds himself with people that will help him tell better stories. His most recent film, 6 Underground, was a super badass and fun action-packed move to watch, but it was a complete mess of a story. Ryan Reynolds previously talked about what it was like being directed by Bay saying:

“When you’re shooting with Michael Bay, you never know what’s going to happen. It’s sort of chaos. You never  know what you’re going to get, but there’s a rhyme and reason to it all at the end. … Most of Bay’s direction is just, ‘FASTER!’”

As for what Bay is working on now, he will helm an ensemble drama for Sony titled Black Five, which is based on an original idea he came up with. Top Gun: Maverick‘s Ehren Kruger is writing the script. There are no details on what the story for that film will entail, but we’ll keep you updated as details become available.

Now that Bay has a new home to make movies, I’m excited to see what the future holds with his projects!
