Some exciting news recently was announced for the director Christopher McQuarrie‘s upcoming Mission: Impossible sequels. The filmmaker revealed that a character from the original film, Eugene Kittridge, will be coming back to the franchise and Henry Czerny is set to reprise his role.

Kittridge was the IMF agency director who was hunting down Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) in the first film because of his suspicions that Hunt was a mole of the agency. We later learned that Jon Voight’s character Jim Phelps was the real mole.

McQuarrie teased in the announcement, “There is no escaping the past.” Here’s the filmmaker’s tweet:

McQuarrie is obviously digging into Ethan Hunt’s past, which makes me wonder if there will be some other surprises coming. Are you excited to learn that Eugene Kittridge is coming back into the story?

Czerny joins a cast that also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and hopefully Ving Rhames, who has yet to be officially confirmed. Newcomers to the franchise include Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Hayley Atwell (Captain America), Shea Whigham (Joker) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men).

Mission: Impossible 7 is set to be released on July 23, 2021, and Mission: Impossible 8 will arrive on August 5, 2022.
