In the last decade or so,stage plays and musicals based on popular films became a phenomenon. There was the majorly popular Legally Blonde, then there was Beetlejuice, and some recent reveals came in the form of Back to the Future and The Karate Kid, just to name a few. They adapted Mean Girls into a musical for the stage as well, and that was a huge hit. Such a huge hit, in fact, that they are adapting the musical into a movie.
So it was a movie, that became a musical, that will become a movie. You follow? I’m a huge fan of the original movie. I watch it, I quote it, I’m all about it. But I am not convinced that they needed to recreate it in this way to make the movie we already know and love into a musical.
I could be wrong. The music could be fantastic. I already know the writing is good, with Tina Fey still all up in the writing process, and Lorne Michaels continuing to produce. But I’m not convinced they will have a cast that can recapture the magic of the first film, and I’m afraid it won’t be different enough and will pale in comparison.
I hope it’s great, but I’m doubtful. What do you think? Have you seen the musical version?
