It has already been reported that Bill Murray will appear in Ghostbusters: Afterlife along with original cast members Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson. But in case you had any doubt, it’s been confirmed once again that Murray will be in the film and that he is reprising his role as Dr. Peter Venkman.

Vanity Fair‘s Anthony Breznican visited the set of Ghostbusters: Afterlife in Canada back in September, and while he was on the set, he spent some time with Murray while he was shooting his scenes. Murray talked about the new Ghostbusters film a bit, explaining that the story will deal with the loss of Harold Ramis’s Egon:

“Well, we are a man down. That’s the deal. And that’s the story we’re telling, that’s the story they’ve written.”

Murray went on to praise the script for Afterlife saying that it has a lot of emotion in it:

“The script is good. It’s got lots of emotion in it. It’s got lots of family in it, with through lines that are really interesting. It’s gonna work.”

Well, I sure can’t wait to see this! In the film, Egon Spangler’s family moves to a small town where they learn about their grandfather’s legacy and that he used to catch ghosts for a living! I loved the first trailer for the film and the concept of a couple of kids slowly discovering something incredible about their grandpa and the work that he did.

This next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe centers on “a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.”

It also looks like the story will have something to do with Ivo Shandor and the Cult of Gozer, who were discussed in the original film. You can read more about that here.

The film was directed by Jason Reitman from a script he wrote with Gil Kenan. The movie stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, and Paul Rudd. I would just love it if Rick Moranis surprised us and showed up in the film. That would be such a huge moment.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrives in theaters on July 10, 2020.
