Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean) is weird. King of Pop Music, Michael Jackson, was even weirder. Now Depp is plunging into the weirdness and producing a new musical that will tell the story of Jackson’s white glove that he wore in many famous performances and music videos, except the story is that the glove is actually a blood-sucking alien from outer space.
Depp’s production company has acquired the rights for Julien Nitzberg’s musical, For the Love of a Glove: An Unauthorized Musical Fable About the Life of Michael Jackson, As Told By His Glove. Nitzberg was originally hired to write a biopic for the singer, but couldn’t take a traditional stance as Jackson’s past allegations of child molestation can’t be easily fit into a story like this. So Nitzberg went WAY unconventional, and said:
I said, how’s this? Everything MJ has been accused of has actually been caused by his glove, which is actually an alien from outer space [and] feeds on virgin boy blood. They laughed and said, can you do the normal version?… It was morally kind of repugnant to me to do … I turned down a really big paycheck.
Yikes. I don’t think the victims or victims advocate groups will see the humor or artistic flare in this piece. It probably should have just stayed buried because I can’t even imagine that enough people would want to see this that it could make any money. A more sincere biopic is being made by the producers of Bohemian Rhapsody, and I think that one will do great.
