Early Concept Art From STAR WARS Artist Ralph McQuarrie For The Original MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Movie

Here’s something you may or may not know about director Gary Godard’s live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe. Legendary Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie was brought in early on to create the designs for the film. He did this as early as 1984 during a break in his work for Cocoon.

The designs he created for the film were mostly unused and it’s a shame because what he created was awesome! This is the version of He-Man that fans like myself were all hoping to see!

Gary Goddard previously shared a good amount of details on what it was like working with McQuarrie and offered some insight on the designs. You can read through that after you see the concept art!

We dive into all the details about the making of Masters of the Universe in an episode of our Secret Level podcast, and you can listen to that here!

The following is from Goddard:

“When I was directing MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE and we were just starting on the conceptual ideas, John DeCuir (CLEOPATRA, KING & I, HELLO DOLLY, GHOSTBUSTERS) was the first person that signed on to initiate conceptual work. I had hoped to involve Ralph but he was signed on to Ron Howard’s production of COCOON at the time and was not available. Then about three weeks into MASTERS, Ralph called and said ‘Cocoon has been put on hold. Might be a week, might be a month, might not resume at all. Do you still want me to work on Masters as I am available, but if I get called back on Cocoon, I’ll have to honor that contract.’ So I said yes, come on board. So Ralph joined us but as it turned out only for about three weeks as Cocoon went back into active pre-production and he had to return. But in these three weeks, Ralph did some interesting design work. With his passing last week, I went and dug into my old MASTERS file and found these. I thought fans might like to see them as they have never appeared anywhere before, at least not to my knowledge.

SKETCHES – Masters of the Universe “Ralph generally did thumbnails first, to get a feeling for the world and the characters. These are some initial sketches for the “world” of Eternia and some of the denizens there in. We talked early on about “robotic sentries” because Mattel had stated early on that He-Man “could never harm people” so that drove the idea of creating an army of “robot sentries” that would spark and explode when hit, rather than “die”. The female shown was a first sketch idea of Evil-Lyn. There was an idea early on for a “cute robot” which I killed as there were tons of cute robots in TV and films then and I didn’t want to have yet another one.

VEHICLES – Masters of the Universe “In the first version of the script, and per Mattel, they had hoped to see a number of designs with “toyetic” possibilities. Ralph started sketching some ideas based upon some existing Mattel designs for toys, and then started to veer more into an approach that based the flying jets more on bird-like shapes as evidenced in the center of this set of sketches.

PLACES – Masters of the Universe “These are more thumbnails showing the early ideas for the opening sequence. We were to be on Eternia and I had wanted originally to give the sense of a true “world”. Various shots were going to show different aspects and “lands” within Eternia, all leading ultimately to GRAYSKULL CASTLE. In my mind, the idea of bringing the Eternians to Earth was a given due to budget and this was the script that I had signed on to make. But I had hoped in a sequel that we would go to Eternia, and my thought was that the world of Eternia should be every bit as interesting as anything in LORD OF THE RINGS (meaning the books of course), or in the world of the Star Wars movies. But to be different, I was pushing more towards a Tolkien-esque world for Eternia.

BAD GUYS – Masters of the Universe “Once the Thumbnails were roughed out, Ralph and I would talk and he would take things to the next level. Here we have a look at Evil-Lyn (and several variations) and one of Skeletor. In this one, I was playing with the idea that SKELETOR might actually have a SKULL MASK that was fashioned to instill fear in people. Underneath, as with The Phantom of the Opera, and with Doctor Doom and later, Darth Vader, is a scarred human being whose face had been severely disfigured and scarred in some long-ago accident or battle. So this was a SKULL MASK with a helmet. Ultimately we decided this was too “Darth Vader” and also Mattel was of the opinion, probably rightly so, that Skeletor had to be SKELETOR –which is to say a SKULL with speaking abilities on an otherwise perfectly healthy male human body.

GOOD GUYS – Masters of the Universe “Early character designs for He-Man, Man At Arms, Teela, and what would become GWILDOR, the character I created to take the place of ORKO. In the days before digital animation, the idea of bringing either ORKO or BATTLE CAT to life in a live action world would have meant stop motion animation, and a great deal of painstaking effects work. As this was being done on a limited budget ($17,000,000) the idea of having BATTLE CAT or ORKO was out of the question. But of course, by bringing them to Earth, we avoided any accusations that we had taken them out of the mythology – they just didn’t make the jump to Earth. In retrospect it would have been very cool to have Battle Cat in that opening confrontation in the Throne Room, and to have brought him back into it for the scene where our Earthling teenagers say goodbye and return home. Ralph was still working on that little cute robot which I kept telling him was a no-go. And these initial studies were based largely on the Toy designs, and I was pushing Ralph to move away from that and to begin inventing our own designs for the movie. “As we continued development on the project Ralph worked on some initial sketches for Castle Grayskull. In this case, I wanted the castle to be based on the iconic version from the animated show, but I wanted it grounded in reality as well. His initial thumbnails were very good.

Vehicle “He also was working on vehicle ideas- though these initial ideas — as you can tell — were based on the toys. I told Ralph that we needed to veer away from any toy-like vehicles. I wanted to create our own look and feel. Again, we were in a world where sword and sorcery fantasy mixed freely with high-tech futuristic technology. There were swords and blasters, and there were medieval castles side-by-side with high-tech vehicles. With this, we decided to take liberties, and yet find something new that would be based upon the world we were creating for the film and not on the pre-existing toys. We came up with a mix of unique flying warships and air discs.

“The entire finale sequence, when we brought Skeletor to Earth, was to be a massive “Air Chase” through the skies of our suburban city. Key to this sequence, is the idea I had come up with for the flying discs, and the “Air Centurions” that would be chasing He-Man though the streets, and over and around the rooftops. At this point I was still selling this idea to the producers and to the studio – it wasn’t yet in the script. But Ralph got what I wanted right away. Even in his earliest pen-and-ink thumbnails, there was a grace to the figures — he really had a great sense of staging and design. Air Centurions were an elite part of Skeletor’s Army, and they needed to have a military feel about them. Ralph and I met a few times and talked the idea over, and at one point, Ralph was going to do some color renderings of the Air Centurions in attack mode over a suburban town. But then he got the call to return to Cocoon, and we never got those color renderings, much to my disappointment. But we did get these very cool thumbnails and preliminary designs (see Post 2 of Ralph McQuarrie and MoTU), and later Bill Stout would use these for the basis of the final version in the film. The interesting thing about MASTERS is that we had John DeCuir, Sr. on initially, but then another movie, which he had signed on for, started up. And we had a break in our schedule from the time we started (in 1984) through the time we actually made the movie (1986) — when the project moved from Warner Brothers (where Howard Kazanjian was going to be the producer) to Cannon. Once we were fully funded, Bill Stout came on as the key concept designer, moving up to become the Production Designer early on. Bill brought in Moebius for some concepts of key elements and costumes, and Claudio Mazzoli contributed a great deal of conceptual art as well.

But Ralph was in there at the very beginning. Working with Ralph, though brief, was a pleasure. Thoroughly professional and easy to work with, it was always a positive experience when we met to discuss sketches and conceptual ideas. In the three weeks that we had together on Masters, we were able to just scratch the surface of things. But there’s no doubt his sketches, as simple as they were, helped me to sell the entire idea of the “sky chase” between the Air Centurions and He-Man. And it’s hard to imagine the movie without this exciting chase sequence that provides the climax to the second act.

This last pencil drawing by Ralph is my favorite – a lone Air Centurion, on a sleek aero-dynamic disc, ready for battle.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been having a lot of fun with some of the A.I. programs out there that are generating art based on the descriptions you feed it. Some of the art it pumps out is pretty damn awesome!

Anyway, this music video for Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” song is made up entirely of A.I. generated art that is based on the lyrics of the song. The results are haunting and cool! Check it out!

The IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA Cast Played a Hilarious Prank on Danny DeVito

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of those shows that never fails at making me bust up in laughter. That show is so damn funny! Well, the cast and crew of the series played a hilarious prank on Danny DeVito for April Fool’s Day, and the prank is just as amazing as the comedy in the series.

That prank included a fake script that was written and while reading it, DeVoto was so alarmed by the subject matter that he contemplated calling up his lawyer. The author shared the details of that fake script In a recent interview with Uproxx:

“Then they throw me in the lockup, the big lockup. I get raped by everybody and the cops. And they kept going back to the bar and then Frank would get raped. And I go back to the bar, Frank would get raped. And I said, ‘What the f***, man? Call my lawyer.’ Right?”

DeVito ended up reading through the script and when he got to the end there was a surprise waiting for him. He said:

“I got to the end of the script. And the last guy that nailed me leans in. Well, Frank is now laying on the ground, [his] face is on the ground. He’s been f***** by every … And the guy leans down and he says, ‘April fools, b****.’ And I realized it was April 1st. They wrote this script in order to break my balls.”

DeVito ended up calling up his co-stars, and they all busted up laughing. I just love that they took the time to actually write a full script as a joke for DeVito!

Dark Horse and CD PROJEKT RED have teamed up again the bring us new collectible figures from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The line features Geralt in his Toussaint Relic Armor from the Blood and Wine expansion, Geralt in his Toussaint Relic armor, Vesemir, and Imlerith.

The Geralt in his Toussaint Relic Armor is a limited edition with only 2,000 units being made worldwide, so don’t wait to get that one if you like it. Both Geralt figures stand at 7.75’’ tall and will retail for $59.99 for the tourney armor and $79.99 for the relic armor. Vesemire stands at 8.25’’ and will retail for $59.99 while Imlerith stands at 9’’ tall and retails for $69.99. Each figure will include their own 1.5’’ display base, so keep that in mind when measuring space for them. The baseline figures will be available January 18, 2023 while the deluxe Geralt Toussaint Relic Armor figure will be available Spring 2023.

My favorite figures are Geralt in tourney armor and Vesemir. The metallic aspects of the other armors just don’t look as good to me, especially the brass color just looks too bright. But what do you think? Will you be checking these out when they are available?

Cool Video Offers a Side-by-Side Comparison of Disney’s Original PINOCCHIO and the New Film

Here’s a cool video that offers a side-by-side, shot-for-shot comparison between Disney’s original 1940 animated film Pinocchio and the trailer for director Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming 2022 remake coming to Disney+.

As I’m watching this, I’m just reminded of how amazing and beautiful the original film is. In fact, the new film seems lifeless compared to the animated movie! That’s just my point of view, though.

I’m sure the new Pinocchio movie will be fine. Zemeckis is a very talented director and storyteller. I just don’t see the point of remaking the film, because it’s clear to me that the remake will not be better than the original. What do you all think?

TUBBZ Adds Music Icons To Their Duck Collectibles

TUBBZ has launched a new Music collection of their iconic cosplaying ducks. First to take the stage are Ozzy Osbourne, Motorhead’s frontman Lemmy, and Iron Maiden’s mascot Eddie The Trooper. Lemmy comes complete with a whiskey scented bottle under wing and Ozzy has his iconic bat. But I think that Eddie The Trooper is definitely my favorite one, everything about it comes together so well.

Also joining the pond, though not part of the music collection for some reason, is Hatsune Miku. Dressed up in a winter look, Snow Miku is ready for a winter time performance. This duck is adorable and if you are a fan of Hatsune Miku you will love it. You can find these and the rest of the collection of ducks at TUBBZ now.

ROCKSMITH+ Launches Next Week!

I love guitar and I love games which is one reason why I’ve come to love Ubisoft’s Rocksmith series. It’s a video game that teaches you to play a real guitar in gameplay similar to classic titles like Guitar Hero and Rock Band (two more games I absolutely love). A good long while ago, Ubisoft announced the new iteration of Rocksmith would be Rocksmith+ and it would be a subscription service where you pay a monthly or annual rate and get access to the entire catalog of songs that they prepare for it. The other day, Ubisoft revealed more details including the fact that the game is releasing next week on September 6.

At launch, Rocksmith+ will have over 5,000 songs across a wide range of genres and featuring a variety of artists like “The Clash, Juan Gabriel, Eurythmics, Cake, Muddy Waters, Natalia Lafourcade, Alicia Keys, Boston, Martinho Da Vila, Peter Tosh, Santana, Van Morrison, and many more.” The game previously held a closed beta and I got to briefly play around on it. The UI was a little cluttered from what I remember but hopefully they’ve made it a bit more intuitive. Other than that, it felt like playing any other Rocksmith game. Rocksmith+ does offer a few new features though such as the Rocksmith+ Connect mobile app which will let you use your phone’s microphone for the game instead of requiring the use of the Rocksmith Real Tone Cable. What’s more is that some audio interfaces will be compatible. Unfortunately, Ubisoft will not provide any support related to 3rd party interfaces being used and do not guarantee compatibility with any.

Another new feature is the Rocksmith Workshop which will let you transcribe your own arrangements of songs in the game. It’s important to note that you cannot add music, create your own music, or anything like that. These are merely arrangements of songs that Ubisoft has permission to include in Rocksmith+.

I’m very excited for Rocksmith+ to launch on September 6! At launch, the game will be available exclusively on PC and because it’s a subscription service, it is limited to the Ubisoft Store (affiliate link). There are 3 subscription options as follows: 1-month for $14.99, 3-months for $39.99, or 12-months for $99.99. If you have other Rocksmith games or participated in the closed beta, you will be eligible for an extra free month if you get a 3-month subscription or an extra 3-months if you get a year subscription. What songs will you be learning and playing?

AMAZING DEFENDERS is Said to Bring 3 New Unique Themes to the YU-GI-OH! TCG

Recently, Konami announced the new Amazing Defenders set for the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. This is a 60-card set that brings three new themes to the game with each one having a unique gameplay style. The themes are as follows:

  • A fully equipped rescue vehicle that’s first on the scene! It’s got all the tools you need to survive and overcome any threat.

  • An Xyz Monster that needs a little TLC to reach its full potential! Raise it well and there’s nothing you can’t accomplish together.

  • A Ritual Monster who only appears upon mastering the mystic dance. What kind of powers does it hold?

Are we sure these are new themes? The first one sounds like a revamp of ROIDs, I’m not sure about the second, and the third sounds like it might be a Ritual version of Cyber Blader and company. If you have thoughts about the second theme, let me know in the comments because I’m sure I’m just overlooking something. I know the art for the pack shows us what appear to be new monsters, but I’m not convinced they’re brand-new.

Regardless of whether or not these truly are new themes or not, Amazing Defenders will include reprints as well and 15 cards in the set will be available as Collector’s Rares. The rarity breakdown is as follows:

  • 10 Ultra Rares

  • 15 Super Rares

  • 35 Rares

Each pack of Amazing Defenders will have 7 cards: 1 Foil and 6 Rare. The set is slated for release on January 20 and will cost $4.49 per pack.
